Science Education

Science education is critically important to the future economy and status of the United States in the global arena, both for the next generation of scientists and for an informed citizenry. A strong foundation in science is also important for the many non-science majors, who may take only one or two science classes in college. Their experience and education in science will shape their behavior and their decisions in matters related to health, the environment, food production, energy use, and job creation in science- and technology-related fields. Our faculty who investigate issues in science education have a variety of interests, including authoring textbooks and case studies, testing how different teaching techniques support student understanding of science and scientific concepts, developing new laboratory activities, and promoting science and biology literacy in the American population.
