AIMSS Summer Institute 2008

Purpose:

The purpose and intent of the 2008 Summer Institute is to expose AIMSS students to math and science through classes, ongoing research activities, cultural activities and to encourage students to pursue STEM degrees upon entering college. The curriculum integrates American Indian cultural awareness activities when feasible and appropriate. Participants will be taught with a hands-on approach. Instructors have developed a lesson plan for their content area and integrated laboratory experience, analytical thinking and problem solving techniques into their instruction. This summer participants will be exposed to Environmental Science concepts, (the interaction between humans and their own environment), focusing on water quality of the Illinois River located in NE Oklahoma. Students will also be introduced to a variety of environmental related careers. The Oklahoma PASS objectives standard of “Science Processes and Inquiry” will be integrated into student’s assignments. These standards were chosen due to the fact, they are taught at all grade levels, because the understandings and abilities associated with these concepts should be developed throughout a student’s educational experience.
