Robert Dean Bass Memorial Scholarships
Number given: 4–10—Amount: $1,000–$3,000
Application deadline: Monday after Spring Break

The Department of Political Science is responsible for the administration of the College of Arts and Sciences Robert Dean Bass Memorial Scholarship Program. The Bass scholarships are merit scholarships for which undergraduate students in Economics and Political Science are eligible. Students must have a minimum 3.65 GPA, at least 40 hours completed at OU, and no more than 90 completed hours. Benson Undergraduate Paper Award
Number given: 1—Amount: $100
Application deadline: Nomination only

The Benson award honors each year the best research paper done by an undergraduate Political Science or Public Affairs and Administration major or minor. The winner receives a cash award. Nominations for the award are made by faculty members.

June and Oliver Benson Memorial Scholarship
Number given: 1—Amount: $500

Application deadline: Monday after Spring Break

The Benson scholarship is a merit scholarship for Political Science and Public Affairs and Administration majors at the junior level. To be eligible, students must have at least twelve hours in political science major credit at OU, including at least six completed hours, and a minimum 3.50 cumulative GPA.

Cortez A. M. Ewing Public Service Fellowships
Number given: 5—Amount: $500 travel grant and $3,500 grant for living expenses

Application deadline: January 15, 2008

The Ewing fellowship program annually sponsors summer internships in Washington, DC. Students receiving the awards serve as interns in congressional offices or public agencies and are awarded travel and living expenses. Any undergraduate student (sophomore standing or above) is eligible to apply, although preference is given to those students who expect to return to the University of Oklahoma campus in the semester following the summer intern experience. Application forms can be obtained at the Political Science Department office, and are generally due by the end of the fall semester. John Halvor Leek Memorial Scholarships

Application deadline: Monday after Spring Break

The Leek scholarships are merit scholarships for Political Science and Public Affairs and Administration majors at the junior level and for Political Science, Public Administration, and Congressional Studies students at the graduate level.  To be eligible, undergraduate students must have at least twelve hours in political science major credit at OU, including at least six completed hours, and a minimum 3.50 cumulative GPA. Graduate students must have a minimum 3.50 in the graduate work in political science.

Joseph Crim Pray Paper Award
Number given: 1—Amount: $100

Application deadline: Nomination only

The Pray award honors the best sophomore-level paper written by an undergraduate Political Science or Public Affairs and Administration major or minor for a 2000-level "gateway" course.  The winner receives a cash award.  Nominations for the award are made by faculty members.

Allan Saxe Award
Number given: 1—Amount: $750

Application deadline: Monday after Spring Break

The Saxe award is for Political Science and Public Affairs and Administration majors at the junior level. The award is based on both merit and need. To be eligible, students must have at least twelve hours in political science major credit at OU, including at least six completed hours, and a minimum 3.50 cumulative GPA.

Kelly Sullivan Memorial Scholarship
Number given: 1—Amount: $375–$450

Application deadline: Monday after Spring Break

The Kelly Sullivan scholarship is a merit scholarship for Political Science and Public Affairs and Administration majors at the junior level. To be eligible, students must have at least twelve hours in political science major credit at OU, including at least six completed hours, and a minimum 3.50 cumulative GPA. Carl Albert Center Undergraduate Research Fellowships
Number given: 6 —Amount: $1,600 paid in four installments

Application deadline: Fall

CAC fellowships offer students the opportunity to conduct collaborative research in politics and government with faculty members. In addition to engaging in original research with a mentor professor, fellows meet as a group twice monthly with Professor Glen Krutz and guest speakers to discuss different research traditions.

The CAC fellowships offer students the opportunity to conduct collaborative research in politics and government with faculty members. The broad mission is to integrate students into the community of scholars. Students regularly take part in the various conferences and symposia sponsored by the Center. Many present their own research at professional scholarly meetings, and some have published their collaborative research in professional journals. This program is open to all University of Oklahoma undergraduate students, regardless of major. Hugh MacNiven Award
Number given: 1—Amount: $500
Application deadline: Nomination only

The MacNiven Award is awarded for the most outstanding research paper written by a student in the Master of Public Administration (MPA) program during the previous calendar year. Nominations for the award are made by faculty members.

Walter F. Scheffer Scholarship
Number given: 2—Amount: $500 each
Application deadline: February 1

The Scheffer Scholarship is a merit scholarship for students currently enrolled in the Master of Public Administration (MPA) program who have completed a minimum of eight (8) hours of OU graduate work, have no more than twenty-four (24) completed hours and have a minimum 3.50 GPA. The award is based on grade point average, letters of recommendation, career accomplishments, or other evidence of academic promise. Students may self-nominate by submitting a statement and one faculty recommendation letter. V. Stanley Vardys Award
Number given: 1—Amount: $250
Application deadline: Nomination only

The Vardys Award honors scholarly excellence and commitment by recognizing and encouraging outstanding research and writing by students in the PhD program. Articles submitted for publication to professional journals, papers delivered or accepted for delivery at professional meetings, or other scholarly papers nominated by members of the faculty are eligible for consideration. The paper must have been written by the student is still enrolled in course work, before the completion of the General Examinations. The award is open as to field of study and topic of research; however, the quality of work being equal; preference will be given to work in comparative politics and international affairs. The award need not be given if no eligible work satisfies the standard of excellence. Nomination by faculty members, or student can self-nominate.

David R. Morgan Award
Number given: 1—Amount: $500
Application deadline: Nomination only

Given in recognition of outstanding research accomplishments by a doctoral student. The winner is selected for continuous developmental growth as a scholarly researcher, demonstrated independence as a scholarly researcher, high quality and professional competent research, and innovative and professional application of research methods and skills. The award recognizes the student's development as a scholar and researcher; it is not an award for a single paper or article.

Ronald M. Peters, Jr. Award
Number given: 1—Amount: $500
Application deadline: Nomination only

Given in recognition of exceptional teaching as a graduate teaching assistant. Outstanding teaching is demonstrated by assessments by the P Sc 1113 coordinator and faculty visitations; high regard by students, as evidenced by high scores on student evaluation surveys or testimonial letters by students; rigorous, reasonable grade distributions, and well-prepared course syllabi; demonstrated interest in and care for students as evidenced by holding regular office hours, advising of students, writing letters of reference, and other evidence of accessibility. The award is given only when an outstanding candidate is presented.

George B. Williams Award
Number given: 1—Amount: Varies
Application deadline: Nomination only

The George B. Williams Award is presented for the outstanding graduate research paper, thesis, or dissertation completed during the calendar year, with a preference for, but not limited to, work in state and local government. Faculty nominate papers for consideration.

John W. Wood Award
Number given: 1—Amount: $200
Application deadline: Nomination only

The award is given for the best graduate or undergraduate paper, thesis, or dissertation in the field of American political theory, political leadership, or the presidency. Research and writing will comply with accepted academic standards, department, and university policies. Undergraduate work may include either a single paper or a series of papers amounting to 10 to 20 pages. A more lengthy work would be expected for graduate theses or dissertations. The Wood Award may be given for a paper or series of papers written for a course, for a master's thesis, or a doctoral dissertations.

Chris A. deJong Award
Number given: 1—Amount: $400
Application deadline: Nomination only

This award is for students majoring in Political Science. The student must have at least a 3.00 overall grade point average. Selection criteria shall include a demonstrated extraordinary love of learning, either (1) by efforts to pursue education that rise far above the efforts made by typical students, or (2) by overcoming obstacles and challenges that make it more difficult for the student to achieve his or her educational goals. Students are nominated by faculty.
