| The Department of Political Science offers graduate
work leading to
the master of arts (M.A.), the master of public administration
(M.P.A.),
and the doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.). The department has
approximately
100 students in its various on-campus graduate programs, and about half
these students are pursuing work at the doctoral level. The
department
also sponsors a large off-campus master's degree program in public
administration
in which about 350 students currently are enrolled. A number of
courses
are offered in the evenings to accommodate the large number of
part-time
students enrolled, especially in the public administration
program.
The principal fields of study for the M.A. and Ph.D. are
American
government and politics, comparative politics, international relations,
political theory, public administration, and public
policy. Special areas of
concentration within certain fields are available at the doctoral level
and currently include Congress and representation. The department
also allows other areas of concentration with the approval of the
student's
advisory committee and the Director of Graduate Studies.
