LAW

No particular course of study is a prerequisite for admission to law school, although political science and related disciplines are obvious choices as a major. Law schools encourage pre-law students to be guided by their own interests in the undergraduate program within the general objective of obtaining a broad educational background. In addition, the student should attempt to develop the ability to communicate effectively in oral and written expression, to think clearly and systematically, and to obtain a deep and critical understanding of human institutions and values.

Applicants to the University of Oklahoma College of Law must have an undergraduate degree prior to enrollment, take the Law School Admission Test (LSAT), and participate in the Law School Data Assembly Service (LSDAS). The latter provides an evaluation of your academic record and your LSAT score to the law schools to which you apply.

An excellent resource is the Law School Admission Council website. You can register online for the LSAT and LSDAS; order publications, CDs and videos; and even apply to law school(s) online.

Information about American law schools and application procedures can be found in The Official Guide to ABA-Approved Law Schools, which is available online at the LSAC website. This and many other useful resource publications can also be ordered online.

Registration packets for the LSAT and LSDAS can be obtained from the University of Oklahoma College of Law Admissions Office (300 Timberdell Road, Norman, OK 73019), the University of Oklahoma Counseling Center in Goddard Health Center, Room 201, or from the Law School Admission Council website.

The LSAT is offered four times a year, although the University of Oklahoma requires that it be taken no later than February of the year in which admission is sought. You may take the test more than once, but normally the scores will be averaged. The LSAT score and the undergraduate overall grade point average are key determinants of admission.

ADVICE TO PRE-LAW STUDENTS is available online, or a hard copy can be obtained in Dale Hall Tower, Room 229. Pre-law students are also invited to seek advice from the University of Oklahoma College of Law Admissions Office at 325-4726.
