STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

Participation in campus organizations can be an important part of your learning experience. The following is a list of organizations of obvious interest to the political science major. The information regarding purpose and qualifications for membership has been provided by each organization. The names and phone numbers of each organization's president and faculty sponsor are available at the Student Life website.

COLLEGE REPUBLICANS

Purpose: To promote the principles of the Republican Party among the students of OU, to recruit students as members of the club and as members of the Republican Party, to aid in the election of Republican candidates at all levels of government, to assist the Oklahoma Federation of College Republicans in its aims and directives, and to develop political skills and leadership abilitites among Republican students as preparations for future service by them to the Party and to the community.

Qualifications: Open to all University of Oklahoma students.

MODEL UNITED NATIONS OF THE SOUTHWEST

Purpose: Provide opportunity to participate in simulation of the actual working of the United Nations.

Qualifications: Any University of Oklahoma student may apply for a delegation at the Secretary General's office.

OKLAHOMA INTERCOLLEGIATE LEGISLATURE

Purpose: To teach delegates how to write and present legislation and use parliamentary procedure and/or argue Moot Court cases. To prepare a delegation to send to a conference held at the State Capitol building every fall and spring for five days. Almost 20 schools from around Oklahoma participate in the semi-annual competition, which is modeled after the Oklahoma State Legislature.

Qualifications: Open to all students.

OU PRE-LAW CLUB

Purpose: To provide a forum for undergraduate students who are interested in attending law school after graduation.

Qualifications: Open to any pre-law student.

PI ALPHA ALPHA

Purpose: The Department of Political Science sponsors a chapter of Pi Alpha Alpha-the national honorary society for public affairs and administration. The purpose of the society is: ...to encourage and reward scholarship and accomplishment among practitioners of public affairs and administration, to promote the advancement of education and scholarship in the art and science of public affairs and administration, and to foster integrity and creative performance in the conduct of governmental and related public service operations.

Qualifications: Membership is open to graduate students, to faculty, and to alumni.

PI SIGMA ALPHA

Purpose: To further study in political science.

Qualifications: Must have 12 hours of political science, a 3.00 GPA in the major, and a cumulative 3.00 GPA.

STUDENT ASSOCIATION FOR PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION (SAPA)

Purpose: To further the interests of students majoring in Public Affairs and Administration and to offer extra-curricular activities and a social forum in which important and relevant issues of public management can be discussed and analyzed. Also, SAPA provides information on graduate programs in public administration and public policy topics, aids in career development, and provides information on fellowships, internships, and available jobs.

Qualifications: Open to any undergraduate student interested in public administration.

YOUNG DEMOCRATS

Purpose: To organize those interested in the Democratic Party.

Qualifications: Anyone who is not a member of any political party other than the Democratic Party.
