Message from the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Psychology at the University of Oklahoma. The tradition of psychology at OU is truly remarkable. The University of Oklahoma was founded barely ten years after Wilhelm Wundt established the first formal psychology laboratory, yet a psychology course appeared in the very first course catalogue published at OU in 1892, and psychology has been a vibrant part of this institution ever since.

Graduate Program

The Department of Psychology offers both Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Psychology. Areas of specialization in graduate training include cognitive psychology, social, industrial-organizational, quantitative psychology, animal cognition (jointly with zoology), and developmental & personality psychology.

PGSA Constitution

Article I - Name, Purpose, and Non-Discrimination policy

  • The name of the organization shall be Psychology Graduate Student Association, also known as "PGSA."
  • The purpose of the PGSA shall be to promote the study of understanding of experimental psychology, while providing an active support group for graduate students currently working in the field of experimental psychology.
  • Neither membership nor participation in PGSA shall be refused to anyone based on gender, race, color, religion, national origin, age, sexual orientation, disability, veteran status, marital status, or political beliefs

Article II - Membership and Qualifications

  • Members will be University of Oklahoma students.
  • All doctoral and masters candidates within the Department of Psychology shall be eligible.
  • To be considered a member, a person must pay yearly dues of $20.

Article III - Organization Leadership: Titles, Terms of Office, Type of Selection, and Duties of Leaders

Section 1 - Titles

  • Titles of officers are as follows: President, Vice President, Secretary/Treasurer, Faculty Liason, Undergraduate Liason, Graduate Student Senate Representatives (2).

Section 2 - Terms of Office

  • Students shall serve one year term, beginning in September when elected and ending the following September when new officers are elected.
  • If an officer graduates or ceases to be enrolled at the University of Oklahoma, he/she shall no longer be an officer, and a special election shall be held to fill the vacant position.

Section 3 - Type of Selection

  • The offices of President, Vice President, and Secretary/Treasurer shall be first nominated and then elected by majority vote.
  • Officers must be members of PGSA.
  • All other officers will be appointed by the Executive Committee.
  • All officers may be re-elected any number of times.
  • If there is a vacancy in an elected office, a special election will be held to fill the position.
  • If there is a vacancy in an appointed office, a new officer will be appointed by the Executive Committee.

Section 4 - Duties of Leaders

  • President: Duties shall include, but may not be limited to calling of meetings, the organization and implementation of activites, and being the chaif of the Executive Committee.
  • Vice President: Duties shall include, but may not be limited to aiding the president in scheduling and running meetings, the organization and implementation of activites, and being a member of the Executive Committee.
  • Secretary/Treasurer: Duties shall include, but may not be limited to aiding in running meetings, collecting dues, and being a member of the Executive Committee.
  • Faculty Liason: Duties shall include, but may not be limited to attending all faculty meetings and reporting to PGSA, and presenting to the faculty an business that PGSA deems necessary.
  • Duties shall include, but may not be limited to attending meetings of the undergraduate organization known as Psychology Club, and reporting back to PGSA, and presenting to the Psychology club any business that PGSA deems necessary.
  • Graduate Student Senate Representatives: Two officers shall hold this post. Duties shall include, but may not be limited to attending Graduate Student Senate meetings, representing PGSA at those meetings, and reporting back to PGSA.

Article IV - Advisor

  • The PGSA advisor shall be a member of the University of Oklahoma Department of Psychology full-time faculty.
  • The advisor shall serve as a liason between the PGSA and the Psychology Department faculty.
  • The advisor shall have no privileges, and shall not be a member of the organization nor the Executive Committee.

Article V - Executive Committee

  • The president shall serve as the chair of this committee.
  • The Executive shall consist of the President, Vice President, and Secretary/Treasurer.
  • Duties shall include, but may not be limited to appointing all non-elected officers, replacing vacancies of non-elected officers, and amending the PGSA Constitution.

Article VI - Teaching Committee

  • The chair of this committee shall be appointed by the Executive Committee.
  • The chair of this committee shall appoint any number of members of this committee that he/she deems necessary.
  • The duties of this committe shall consist of, but may not be limited to promoting a positive and supportive atmosphere fo all students holding a Teaching Assistant position in the Psychology Department.

Article VII - Research Committee

  • The chair of this committee shall be appointed by the Executive Committee.
  • The chair of this committee shall appoint any number of members of this committee that he/she deems necessary.
  • The duties of this committe shall consist of, but may not be limited to promoting and providing oppotunities for students within the Psychology Department to present research.

Article VIII - Philantropy Committee

  • The chair of this committee shall be appointed by the Executive Committee.
  • The chair of this committee shall appoint any number of members of this committee that he/she deems necessary.
  • The duties of this committe shall consist of, but may not be limited to researching an offering community servie opportunities for the entire Psychology Department.

Article IX - Social Committee

  • The chair of this committee shall be appointed by the Executive Committee.
  • The chair of this committee shall appoint any number of members of this committee that he/she deems necessary.
  • The duties of this committe shall consist of, but may not be limited to planning activities to promote interaction and building strong relationships among members of the Psychology Department.

Article X - Meetings

  • A monthly business meeting shall be held at least once a month.
  • Members shall be notified of all meetings through email and fliers.
  • There is no attendace requirement for members.

Article XI - Methods of Amending Constitution

  • Proposed amendments shall be presented in the general meeting in writing, and shall then be read aloud in the meeting.
  • Members shall be notified that the amendmant will be voted on during the next regularly scheduled general meeting.
  • During the meeting in which the vote will take place, the amendment shall be read before the membership, and a majority vote shall be required for the amendment to pass.
  • In the even the proposed amendment is of a timely nature, the Executive Committee shall call an emergency meeting of the entire membership, and the same procedure shall ensue.
  • Upon amendment, three copies of the Constitution must be submitted to the Center for Student Life.

Article XII - Impeachment of Officers

  • Any elected officer may be removed by 2/3 vote of memebrship.

Article XIII - Parliamentary Procedure

  • All procedures not expressly specified by this document shall come from Robert's Rules of Order, Revised.

Article XIV - Compliance and Preemption

  • The Constitution is subject to all provisions of the University of Oklahoma Student Code.
  • PGSA will comply with all local, state, and federal laws.
