Overview

The Department of Psychology at the University of Oklahoma was founded in 1928. It has had a long history of providing high quality training programs in scientific psychology at both the undergraduate and graduate level. At the present time, the Department is focused on psychology as an experimental and applied science and has strong programs in the areas of cognitive, quantitative, social/personality, industrial/organizational, developmental, and animal behavior.

The high academic quality and breadth of these areas of emphasis provide undergraduate psychology majors at the University of Oklahoma an optimal academic foundation whether their interests are in further graduate training in such areas as clinical or experimental psychology, graduate training in other professional areas, such as medicine, law, or business, or immediately applying their undergraduate degree in a wide range of areas in the contemporary marketplace.

At the graduate level, the Department is one of only a limited number of public graduate institutions in the U.S. with an almost exclusive focus on experimental psychology. Our mission is to provide high-quality doctoral training with a strong general emphasis on psychological research. Our program is specifically designed for students who are interested in research and teaching careers in higher education, or research and consulting employment in non-academic settings such as business and industry.

Regardless of the area of specialized training in psychology, a distinctive characteristic of our doctoral program is the superb level of methodological and quantitative skills it provides our students.
