Student Profiles:

Image of Jenny RempelJenny Rempel
Masters of Library and Information Studies Student

Jenny started the program in the Fall of 2007. She had previously earned Bachelor Degrees in Anthropology and Museum Studies as well as a Master Degree in Ancient History from the University of Miami Ohio. She would like to eventually become an academic librarian. Jenny plans to present and defend a portfolio as her end of program assessment, unless the perfect thesis covering the information seeing behavior of archeologists forms in her brain and must get out!!!

Jenny says that she was pleasantly surprised at the theoretical nature of the field of information studies, especially the focus on the theories of information use. "There is such a rich texture of philosophies on how people interact with information that I did not know existed"

Quick Questions:

What was the last thing that you read for pleasure, not for a class:

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte .
I am reading this book only partially for pleasure - it is currently the topic of a heated discussion with my sister over the main character - is she an embodiment of all that is honorable, or is she a flawed character with some honorable traits....

What websites do you visit every day or every week:

I am actually more of a writer on the web - updating my own blog and Facebook page at least once a week.

University committees and appointments:

  • OLISSA - Serving as Secretary
  • Curriculum Committee - Student Representative
  • G.A. for Dr. Brown and Dr. Lester

If I had a million dollars...

I would go on a tour of central Asia and the silk road, and then lay on the beach somewhere for 2 weeks straight! I would write a non-fiction book addressing/critiquing modern religion through a study of ancient cultures. And then I might think about taking another class.

Image of Lyle BarbatoLyle Barbato
Masters of Library and Information Studies Student

As an undergraduate Lyle majored in Math with a Physics minor, and worked with ComPADRE, a group of educational resource collections supporting teachers and students in Physics and Astronomy. After graduation and a stay at the American Center for Physics, he returned to Norman to continue his work with ComPADRE as the Technical Lead for the project. He and became interested in the library and information aspects of managing a digital collections management and decided to persue LIS.

Lyle's plans to write a thesis, and his current research focuses on how rating scales influence user behavior in online catalogs, specifically looking at the influence that a current item's rating has on the click-thru rates for that item.

Quick Questions:

What was the last thing that you read for pleasure, not for a class:

Fiction = Small Gods by Terry Pratchett
Non-Fiction = A War Like No Other: How the Athenians and Spartans Fought the Peloponnesian War

I am recently married - so with planning a wedding, I have not had much time to read.

What websites do you visit every day or every week:

I go to the Washington Post, Slashdot, and TechBargans every day. I use my RSS feeder within LiveJournal to follow other blogs/journals.

University committees and appointments:

  • SLIS representative for the Graduate Student Senate
    • Public Relations Committee member
  • Vice-President, OLISSA
    • Academic Programs Committee (Journal Club and Colloquia)
  • Technical Lead, ComPADRE project

If I had a million dollars...

I would keep doing waht I am currently doing - just with nicer accessories and a bigger house.

Image of Mary ParkerMary Parker
Masters of Library and Information Studies Student

Mary started the program in the Spring of 2008. She had previously earned Bachelor Degrees in History and Information Studies from the University of Oklahoma. She would like to eventually become a public librarian, and currently works at the Norman Public Library as a circulation clerk. Her previous position at NPL was as a shelver, which gave her an interesting perspective on what people like to read. Mary wants to work in a public library because she likes the opportunity to interact with people.

Though she has just started taking courses in the MLIS program, Mary has started to see connections between her undergraduate and graduate work, "I can sometimes see a bigger picture, some theories from my psychology courses will be echoed in the theories I am studying on information seeking, or user behaviors we are studying at in LIS5053."

Quick Questions:

What was the last thing that you read for pleasure, not for a class:

Love in the Time of Cholera
I was interested in the book because it had been made into a movie, so I wanted to read the book before I rented the video.

What websites do you visit every day or every week:

Learn.ou.edu for my classes and I follow the TV show Lost online. I always like to have something to obsess about, it used to be Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings - but now it is Lost.

University committees and appointments:

  • CAS Student Advisory Committee (as undergraduate)
  • G.A. for Dr. Latrobe and Dr. VanFleet

If I had a million dollars...

I would invest the money to live off the interest, buy a nice little house in the Norman area, and then work somewhere I really loved, like a non-profit.

Photo of Summer GoldenSummer Golden
Bachelors of Arts in Information Studies Student

Summer started at OU in the Fall of 2007 after completing her Associates Degree in Liberal Arts at Tulsa Community College. She initially planned to pursue a degree in chemistry but was really interested in the work that her husband was doing as a programmer in the information technology field. Summer likes the flexibility and opportunities that the BAIS degree offers since it does not just focus on computers, but using technology to solve information problems. "It is a much more holistic approach to information solutions."

Quick Questions:

What have been some of your most memorable experiences at OU:

I am the vice president for the OU Non-Profit Leadership Program, and I work as the volunteer coordinator.

What was the last thing that you read for pleasure, not for a class:

Wow, I have to think about that... I just finished The Blue Nowhere on audio tape, I like to listen in my car. It was very good - mystery and suspense on the Internet.

What websites do you visit every day or every week:

I read the news every day, CBS or Fox News . I have to go to learn.ou.edu, and I also have to keep up some different blogs for the courses I am taking.

University committees and appointments:

  • Honors College
  • Transfer Student Leadership Team
  • Non-Profit Leadership Program, Vice-President

If I had a million dollars...

Vacation!
