T R A C I N G S
A new letter for alumni and friends of the
School of Library and Information Studies/The University of Oklahoma
Fall 1999 Vol. 19, no. 1

The OU SLIS alumni Association encourages all alumni and friends of the Library School to join. The regular membership year is July 1-June 30 and dues are $10.00. Donations beyond the $10 are welcomed.

What does the SLIS Alumni Association do?

  • Produces and mails Tracings,, the semiannual newsletter.
  • Honors a former graduate annually with the Award of Merit (this award includes a donation to the Tomberlin Scholarship Fund)
  • Issues a call for papers and makes a $100 award to the winning student.
  • Sponsors a reunion/meeting at the Oklahoma Library Association Annual Conference.
  • Serves as a support group to the School of Library and Information Studies.
  • You are welcome to attend the quarterly meetings. It’s a fun way to get involved! The next meeting will be September 10, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at the Oklahoma Department of Libraries.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE…

As the newness of the new year wears off, everyone settles down to tackle assignments and meet deadlines – deadlines which seemed so far in the future just a few weeks ago. The OU SLIS Alumni Association Board is no different.

Yvonne Hinchee, past Alumni Association President and Chair of the Nominating Committee, has worked hard to present you a great slate of candidates for this spring’s election. Glenda Lamb, Dana Belcher and Jennifer Greenstreet, Student Paper Award Committee members, will soon complete their deliberations and announce the winner of the 1999 Student Paper award. Karen Bays and Dona Davidson, Honors and Awards Committee Co-Chairs, have also worked very hard to publicize and solicit nominations for the Outstanding OU SLIS Alum. The announcement of this year’s Outstanding Alum will be made at the Alumni Association reception at the OLA Annual Conference at the Adams Mark in Tulsa on Thursday, April 27, 2000.

Treasurer David Corbly has overseen the Association’s financial well-being. Sybil Connolly has made sure that we keep everything in perspective and enjoy our networking opportunities. Linda Pye, editor of Tracings, has done a fantastic job of gathering and presenting the information you are reading now.

As the Association faced dwindling revenues and increased printing and distribution costs for Tracings, the Board made the difficult decision to make Tracings a web-based publication. Alums were informed of this decision during our membership drive last summer. Your overwhelming response to the Association’s financial dilemma was fantastic!

As you make your plans to attend the OLA Annual Conference, please join us at the Alumni Reception in the conference hotel on Thursday afternoon, April 27 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. Also, as you explore the exhibits, please stop by the OU SLIS booth and pick up an Alumni Association membership form. With your continuing support, you and the Alumni Association can make a difference!

It has often been said that an organization is only as good as its members. As my term of office draws to a close, I want to thank your outstanding Alumni Association board members for making this a successful year.

Vicki Sullivan, President OU
SLIS Alumni Association

NEWS FROM THE LIBRARY SCHOOL. . .

Dr. June Lester and the other faculty at the Library School have been busy this Fall getting ready for the accreditation visit April 10-11, 2000. Dr. Lester says that Karen Cazort has been working on the accreditation report and has done a fantastic job!

There are 94 FTE students enrolled in the Library School, and 43% of the enrollment is from outside Norman. The School continues to use distance learning technology to reach interested students in various areas of Oklahoma.

Dr. Lester will step down as Director of the Library School on June 30, 2000. A search for a new director is currently underway. Applicants have been screened and preparations for campus visits are underway. Drs. Rhonda Taylor and Judith Overmier are directing the search process.

FACULTY NEWS

DR. WALLACE KOEHLER:

Dr.Wallace Koehler will be teaching the Library School’s first ever fully web-based course during the Summer of 2000. In the course, Web Document Management, students will explore a wide range of approaches to bring bibliometric control to the "Wild Wild Web." Dr. Koehler says, "The course is still in development, but I should have somewhat of an outline in the not too distant future." He will put that outline on the web.

DR. KATHLEEN HAYNES:

Dr. Kathleen Haynes was granted leave from OU SLIS in the Fall 1999 term to begin the designing and creating of a thesaurus for archival moving image materials. The materials for the research are from the Julian P. Kanter Political Commercial Archive (PCA) at the Political Communication Center (PCC) in Burton Hall. The leave permits Dr. Haynes to further develop her expertise in organizing moving image materials for use and to incorporate film and video techniques and preservation standards into the proposed vocabulary. This research helps the School continue its leadership position at the University in the use of information and communications technology as expressed in its strategic plan and in its action priorities. The project benefits the Political Communication Center by providing increased access to this important resource.

The project also relates directly to the graduate courses she teaches in indexing theory and vocabulary control, the organization of information, and the management of archival materials. She has worked with SLIS graduate students to:

  • evaluate the quality of images in different formats
  • determine how to represent the content of images
  • identify issues in the creation of controlled vocabularies for images
  • identify issues in information retrieval design for multimedia collections

Dr. Haynes was invited to present the work in progress at the Association of Moving Image Archivists (AMIA) annual conference. AMIA is recognized as the leading professional organization concerned with moving image archives.

RETIREMENT

Jim Wilkerson ’67, Serials Librarian at Southwestern Oklahoma State University, retired December, 1999 and has moved from Weatherford, Oklahoma to Muskogee, Oklahoma. A reception to honor him was hosted by colleagues at Southwestern on December 13. Jim has been actively involved with librarianship for many years. While in school at OU SLIS, he was Branch Librarian at Moore Public Library, Moore, Oklahoma. After he received the MLS, he was employed at the Oklahoma Department of Libraries as Institution Library Consultant from 1967-68. He then became Director of the Eastern Oklahoma District Library System and held that position until he accepted a position in Colorado as Director of the Arkansas Valley Library System. After several years in Colorado, he returned to Oklahoma and became Library Media Specialist for K-12 at the Carnegie Public School System, Carnegie, Oklahoma. In 1986, he began teaching a few evening library science courses at Southwestern Oklahoma State University. In January,1987, he was hired as Serials Librarian for the Al Harris Library at Southwestern, a position that he held until his retirement.

Jim has been very active in the Oklahoma Library Association, having served on many committees and roundtables. Furthermore, he was President of the Oklahoma Library Association from 1975-1976. Much to his surprise, he received the Distinguished Librarian award on March 30, 1978. This is the highest honor that can be bestowed by the Oklahoma Library Association.

Jim has been an asset to librarianship as a profession, a wonderful advocate for Oklahoma libraries, and a mentor and friend to many new librarians. We would like to congratulate Jim on his retirement and wish him the best! As a colleague, I can say that he will certainly be missed at Southwestern!

EDITORIAL ON ENID PUBLIC LIBRARY

How many of our libraries get recognized in the editorial section of our local newspapers? The newspaper, The Enid News & Eagle, ran an editorial in its September 6, 1999 edition praisingPublic Library of Enid and Garfield County for its resources and services. Not only the resources, but also the "people working behind the scenes" were highly praised. As they put it, the Public Library "knows a lot of stuff." An alum of OU SLIS, Glenda Lamb, is the Director of the Enid Public Library. Congratulations to Glenda and her staff on a job well done!
