HOW TO SUPPORT THE CENTER FOR CLASSICAL ARCHAEOLOGY AND CIVILIZATIONS Over the years the Center has received financial support from long time friends and now from a growing number of new friends. We greatly appreciate this help and look forward to the continuing partnership that supports our projects and programs. We are most grateful for the generous support that enables us to offer our unique and quality educational experiences to our students and for scholarship assistance that is given to them. Below are brief descriptions of our projects and programs. If any of our activities interest you, we welcome your contributions and please feel free to make inquiries by contacting us. Contact information: HOW TO HELP All of the activities that the Center sponsors are
part of its There are a number of projects, programs, and areas of support that a contributor may consider to support.
ARCHAEOLOGY TRAVEL-STUDY SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarships include, but are not limited to, the following student scholarships. “Ancient STEP Travel-Study Scholarship:” $500 to
$1,000 The Center’s scholarships defray, in part or in whole, the expenses of students who participate in our Archaeology Field School in Italy where the Center has an archaeological project called the “Via Nova Traiana Project.” The scholarships have been very effective in helping students participate who may otherwise have missed the opportunity without financial assistance. The ways that one may support us vary. Contributors may wish to remain anonymous and have their scholarship issued in the name of one of the Center’s scholarships listed above. Other donors prefer to establish scholarships in their own name or as a memorial scholarship. Donors may also wish to give a single one-time scholarship, a number of one-time multiple scholarships, or they may wish to establish one or more annual scholarships. STUDENT EXPENSES (For the summer archaeological program in Italy) Scholarships are very important to help students participate in our annual summer Archaeological Field School in Italy. The Field School in Italy is a five week program and the fee for participation is $2,950. Our students stay in a comfortable hotel near our archaeological site. The fee pays for “on-site” housing and meal expenses for each day and night over the five week period of the program. The fee pays for the study tours of the Center (travel, admission tickets). The fee does not include airfare, tuition, the elective study tour to Naples, or personal spending money. ARCHAEOLOGICAL FIELD SCHOOL ACTIVITIES The activities of the Field School are several and include the following:
CAMPUS PROJECTS AND PROGRAMS A donor may be interested in supporting one or more of the “on campus” activities of the Center. These include the following:
LECTURE SERIES ON CAMPUS AND IN ITALY On Campus: We currently have two very successful
lecture series on the OU campus, “The Barnett Lectures on Classical
Antiquity” and the Lectures provided from the Archaeological
Institute of America through the Oklahoma chapter of the AIA. Some
donors may wish to help us to expand our campus lectures by establishing
a new lecture series. Colloquium: The Center also has a strong interest in creating an international colloquium that will be part of the Center’s activities in Italy. This will be an annual event that features scholars who will focus on topics related to Etruscan and Roman archaeology, history and culture. It will be open to our students and to Italian students, academics, and other interested parties. A donor may have an interest in supporting one or more speakers for this project. SPONSORING OR ASSISTING OUR EXCAVATION PROJECT Some individuals may have an interest in supporting all or a part of our excavation project in Italy (our “Via Nova Traiana Project” at Castel Viscardo near Orvieto. Archaeological expeditions are labor intensive enterprises and include a broad range of expenses for equipment, transportation, staff and specialists. As an example of these varied expenses, they include the costs for vehicles (vans, bus, fuel), and staff support. There is also the expense for essential excavation equipment such as surveying equipment, shovels, buckets, wheel-borrows, trowels, hoes, tent materials, hammers, axes, rope and string, wood, sheet metal, fence materials, nails, and large earth moving vehicles when needed. There is also the expense of storage facilities, computers, and the expenses and materials needed for the preservation, storage and preservation of artifacts.
We again express our appreciation to all who have helped in the success of the Center’s programs and projects. We look forward to your continuing help and we cordially invite others to be our partners in offering quality educational experiences to our students. The Center is very grateful to all of the students and professors who have participated in our projects. We also extend our appreciation for the help that we have received from the offices of the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and the offices of the President and Provost of the University of Oklahoma.
