Study Travel and Excavate the Past
with the CCAC!

--The Ancient STEP Programs are a series of educational programs that focus on introducing or enhancing an understanding of the ancient world for the students of the University of Oklahoma. The programs involve projects, programs and activities that offer students the opportunity to Study, Travel, and Excavate the Past. The Center sponsors, therefore, archaeological projects, lecture series, a summer institute in Rome, symposia, colloquia, and conferences. The programs offer academic credit to all OU students, but the activities are also open to students from other Oklahoma colleges and universities. Some activities closely relate to to Oklahoma high school teachers and students and serve to introduce Oklahoma’s best high school students to the University of Oklahoma. All participants in the programs benefit from a variety of intensive study, travel, or archaeological opportunities. A particularly valuable learning opportunity is the high degree of interaction between students and professors that is offered by the program series.
The aim of the STEP Programs is to help the student understand that the lessons of the past have a ‘living’ application to the modern world. The purpose of these programs, therefore, is to offer opportunities for students to increase their understanding and awareness of the contributions that ancient Mediterranean cultures have made to almost every cultural aspect of the modern world. To accomplish its goals, the STEP Programs offer scholarships for international and national travel that gives a student the opportunity to study the ancient world in the context in which it developed.

Finally, many students who participate in the programs may particularly benefit from the long standing successful OU archaeological expeditions. In addition, their learning experience may be augmented by the lecture series now provided by our nations foremost scholars who lecture at our Oklahoma chapter of the Archaeological Institute of America and our “Barnett Lectures on Classical Antiquity.”

The current programs that are being sponsored by the Center include the following:

The OU Rome Summer Institute (Rome, Italy)
Seminars on Biblical Archaeology
