What is the Classical Archaeology Society?

It is a student organization comprised of undergraduate and graduate students. Its goal is to create opportunities for students to learn about classical archaeology and to spark interest in the field.


What does "classical" archaeology mean?

It is the study of the archaeology of the ancient Mediterranean. This area was composed of the Roman, Greek, Egyptian and Near Eastern civilizations.


How can I find event info?

There are a few ways to stay updated on future events:
(1) The calendar on this website will have upcoming event info posted on it.
(2) You can sign up to receive emails from the Athena list-serve, by joining the organization.
(3) Printed calendars can be picked up from the KH 111, the office of our sponsor, Dr. Farland Stanley.

How is the Classical Archaeology Society (CLAS) able to host so many distinguished speakers?

Lectures are co-sponsored by the Center for Classical Archaeology and Civilizations, an organization founded and headed by Dr. Farland Stanley, Professor of Classics at OU. The AIA lectures are co-sponsored by the American Institute of Archaeology, an organization focused on spreading archaeological knowledge and possibilities around the nation. We have also received generous donations in the past which have allowed us to bring in prominent scholars from around the world to deliver lectures to the OU community. Are there any archaeological projects that CLAS members can participate in?

In the past, CLAS and the Center for Classical Archaeology and Civilizations have advertised dig opportunities that have occurred in conjunction with the University of Oklahoma.


What are the requirements for joining CLAS?

You must be a student at the University of Oklahoma, registered in any department.


What is the cost for joining?

NOTHING!


How can I join?

You can join CLAS in one of two ways:

(1) Go to the Join page on CLAS's website, complete all the fields, and submit the application, or

(2) Fill out an application and turn it in to any CLAS officer or to Dr. Farland Stanley, Kaufman Hall 111. Applications are available on the Classics and Letters Department bulletin board, which is on the first floor of Kaufman Hall.
