It incorporates issues of technology, the environment, working with people and meeting their needs, and the art of three-dimensional design. This course will introduce students to these and other important issues in architecture through lectures, discussions, sketching, direct involvement in design projects and hands-on construction. LEARNING You will become familiar with the various aspects of architecture. OBJECTIVE You will be able to apply these concepts in your own designs. You will actual be able to build your design in full scale. ACTIVITIES Lectures, discussions, drawing, reading, writing, calculations, photography, video, design projects, hands-on construction experience, and research. CAD (computer aided design), world wide web TEXT Lecture Notes - by Prof. Hermann Gruenwald REFERENCES available in the OU library LECTURE NOTES Copies of the overheads used in class will be made available to the students the following day (after 1 PM) at KING KOPY 108 East Lindsey, Norman 321-0202. ASSIGNMENTS All assignments are due at the beginning of class. No late assignments will be accepted and will not qualify for resubmittal. Details can be resubmitted once to achieve a higher grade. PHOTO JOURNAL Submit a minimum of 30 slides (in 8 1/2" x 11" transparent slide pockets 20 per sheet) which summarize architecture and construction. The slides may include: raw materials, formulas, terms, details, various finishes and treatments, completed projects, historical events/structures, structural components and systems, failure of structures, aging of structures, environmental impact, proper/improper, title slides, summary slides, group project, self portray of author, etc. Number the slides and place them in sequence to best tell your story. A picture is worth a thousand words, and the slides should be self explanatory, however you are allowed to submit the slides in a binder with an contents sheet, which identifies the slide and gives a one sentence to one paragraph explanation: 1. Due Date July 18, 1997 GROUP PROJECT Design a play-house. Detail all connections and possible applications. Document the system in form of drawings and scaled models. You will be asked to form groups of 4 (four) by July 14, 1997. By this time I should have received in writing the names of the group members. Students who have not selected a group by this time will be assigned to groups. Preliminary Design due July 15, 1997 Submit a preliminary design, showing front, side, top view on 8 1/2" x 11" paper, in appropriate scale (perspective optional). Completed Project due July 18, 1997. Drawings and scaled model, full-size preferred ABSENCE: Absentee must obtain content and assignments from other students.
