JOINTS

STEEL COLUMNS

Considerations:

	column shape
	column size
orientation of other members (beams etc.)
	size of other members
	shape of other members
	structural function of the joint

Common Connections:

A. Bearing Plate

			beam on top of column
plate serves no specific structural purpose
			only attachment device
load transfer = simple vertical bearing

B. Steel Angles

connect beam web to column flange
			transfer of vertical loads
			typically not a moment connection

C. Welding

			moment connection
			moment transfer between
			column and beam
			rigid frame application
			shop welded
			field welded

Base Plate

			bearing loads
			bottom of column to support
			bolted to concrete
			base plate has structural function
			distributes concentrated load
			eliminates punch effect
