BOLTED CONNECTIONS

GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS

Pin-type Devices:
============
		rivet
		bolt

Type of Connection:
===============
		tension-transfer
			from one plate to the other
			on net section - bolt holes
		shear connection
			on the connection device
Failure:
=====
		slicing = shear
		Single shear = one section
		Double Shear = two sections

Bolt Types:
=========
A 307 Bolts = unfinished
					lowest load capacity
					snug fit
					oversized holes
					some movement
					slipping of the parts

A 325 Bolts = high-strength
A 490 Bolts = high-strength
					nuts tighten to create friction
					in bolt shaft
				F = Friction resistance
				N = threads not excluded
				X = threads are excluded from shear planes
				S = single shear
				D = double shear
Washer
======
		under both head & nut
		high-strength bolts - selfforming washers

Steel rods - threaded
Critical Layout Dimensions: ====================
Pitch (s) = center to center spacing
			2 2/3 or 3 times diameter (d)
			3 times used in this class & book

Edge distance = edge to center
		function of bolt size
		edge tearing
				sheared edges
						= greater
						1.125" - 1.75"
				rolled edges/gas cut edges
						0.875 - 1.25
						P&A 345
Staggered Bolts:
============
		Gage (g) = spacing of the rows
		Diagonal Spacing (m) = diagonal of two bolts
Gage Dimensions for Angles:
=====================
		g
		g 1
		g 2
