Course Description:
JMC 4653 is the capstone course for the Broadcasting & Electronic Media sequence. Students will identify, examine and analyze societal and technological forces on media industries. Students will strive to understand the activities of mass media industries in society through readings, discussion, debate and presentations.

Disability Policy:
Any student who has a disability that may prevent him or her from fully demonstrating his or her abilities should contact the instructor to discuss accommodations necessary to ensure full participation and facilitate his or her educational opportunities.
Requirements and Course Assignments:
1.) Participation: You have a significant responsibility to contribute to class discussions, ask
questions to clarify lecture material, and be prepared to discuss assigned readings.
2.) Attendance: You are expected to take responsibility for class attendance. Poor attendance will affect the assessment of your participation in the class. Please read the assigned material in advance of the date it is listed. The professor reserves the right to give unannounced quizzes that will be factored into your final grade.
3.) Book Review: You will select a book relevant to the class and provide a written book review of between 3 and 5 pages. You may hand in the review anytime before or on April 2nd. Please see the professor about ideas. Or, check out a brief list of books already compiled. The intent is not to limit your reading choices, only to make sure you pick a book which is relevant to the material in this class.
4.) Issue Paper & Presentation: Each student will be responsible for a particular issue from the Taking Sides text.
5.) Technology Paper: You will be required to research and write a major paper on some aspect of media technology. Paper topics must have prior approval from the professor.
