Technology Paper
Each student will write an original essay related to an approved interest in communication and new technology. This essay may focus on a particular technology or a technology related issue (e.g., privacy, social impacts, free speech, etc.). This can be any recent communications device or one of several new communications media. An example of a new communications device is a DVD player. An example of a new medium might be Internet radio or webcasting. If you select a medium, you'll need to understand the technology(ies) that makes it possible. (Remember, we can't all present on DVD players or Internet radio -- do some research, use your imagination!).
Your project should thoroughly explain how the technology or medium works. That is, someone who has no clue about this technology should be able to understand how it works. Specifically, explain the origins of the technology and its influence upon other new communications technologies. Perhaps may be a number of social, ethical, political or legal aspects which can be explored.
It is expected that you will use proper APA style, complete with a list of references. The essay should be between 15 and 20 pages. No papers already used for another class will be permitted. This essay will constitute 25% of the final course grade. The final paper is due on the last regularly scheduled class date (Friday, April 30th).
