Grading and Enrollment Policies

Remember that it is your responsibility to maintain ongoing communication with your faculty member(s). If you need to miss a class (onsite) or if you are going to be delayed in submitting unit assignments (online), you should contact your faculty member to let them know your situation.

Faculty members are not obligated to initiate contact with you before assigning final grades. If you have several absences (onsite classes) or outstanding or late assignments, your grade may be seriously impacted.

Failure to submit assignments for online courses or to attend classes onsite does not constitute a withdrawal. Failure to show up for class or to submit your online assignments may result in an administrative withdrawal from you course(s).

ADMINISTRATIVE WITHDRAWAL
“AW,” meaning Administrative Withdrawal, is a neutral grade used to indicate that a student has been involuntarily withdrawn by the institution. A neutral grade has no impact on a student’s grade point average. Students may receive an AW grade for disciplinary reasons, financial reasons or inadequate attendance.

If you received a grade of AW in the College of Liberal Studies, it is usually because:

1) You did not submit any course work to the instructor.
2) You never contacted the instructor.
3) You never contacted the College to withdraw from the course.

A grade of AW is permanent, and the course must be repeated for credit. It is not a substitute grade for an “I” (incomplete), and cannot be changed to “I” at a later date.

INCOMPLETE GRADE
“I” is a neutral grade and means “Incomplete.” It is not an alternative to a grade of F, and no student may be failing a course at the time an “I” grade is awarded. To receive an “I” grade, the student should have satisfactorily completed a substantial portion of the required coursework for the semester. The instructor will indicate to the student, and to the College of Liberal Studies, what must be done to complete the course and will set a time limit appropriate to the circumstances. However, the time allowed may not exceed one calendar year. Students should not re-enroll in the course to make up the Incomplete.

Please note that in the College of Liberal Studies, you can only receive a grade of “I” if you:

1) Have completed a significant portion (at least 50%) of the course material.
2) Have contacted the instructor prior to the end of the course and have arranged to receive a grade of “Incomplete.” (It will be at the discretion of the instructor to assign a grade of “I.” Although you may have submitted 50% of the course work, that is not a guarantee that the instructor will assign the student an “I” grade.)
3) Have agreed upon a timeline for completing outstanding assignments with your faculty member. (You will have no more than one year from the date the grade is awarded to complete outstanding assignments. A faculty member may give you a much shorter timeframe if they deem it appropriate to do so.)

After one calendar year has elapsed, the “Incomplete” grade will become a permanent mark on your transcript. Should the incomplete grade become permanent, to receive credit for the course, you will have to re-enroll for the same course and pay for it again.

If you submit all remaining assignments as directed by your faculty member, they will determine your final grade for the course. The revised grade will be posted to your permanent academic record as a slash grade (I/A).

FREE DROP POLICY
You have one full weeks (5 business days) after the course start date within which to drop your course. If you drop during this time frame, your enrollment will be cancelled, and any charges that may have been applied to your account will be reversed. If you have already paid for the course, a refund will be issued if you drop within two weeks after the start date.

After the one week free drop period has passed, you will still be allowed to “withdraw” from any course if necessary. A grade of “W” will be placed on your permanent record, and you will be required to pay for the course.

STUDY IN DEPTH ENROLLMENT
The Study in Depth is your senior capstone enrollment with the college. The SID should be taken during your last semester of enrollment in our college. You should be enrolled in the Study in Depth (LSTD 4953) during the semester you intend to graduate.

The SID is completed as an independent working project. You do not attend any classes for the SID. Instead, you submit a proposal telling us your research topic, and we will find a faculty member to assign as your adviser. You will work with the faculty member to refine your research topic and techniques.

For information on submitting your proposal, visit this website:

We also have posted a suggested SID timeline for you to follow. Please note that it is not too late to submit your proposal, but we ask that you submit it as soon as possible.

Please contact your academic adviser if you have questions regarding the Study in Depth.

At the time of enrolling in the Study In Depth, you should also complete the Application for Graduation
