Even though there are only four Gospels in the Bible (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John), scholars have long known about other Gospels – accounts of the birth, life, teachings, activities, death, and resurrection of Jesus -- that did not make it into the New Testament. Only recently have these other Gospels become widely known to the reading public at large. In this seminar we will look at a number of these other accounts of Jesus’ life and death, try to understand the unique portrayal of Jesus found in each one, and seek to explain why these books were left out of the New Testament.
The seminar has no prerequisites and is not intended to support or oppose any particular religious point of view. Believers, unbelievers, and people who are still seeking are welcome.
The seminar meets March 24 - 28, 2010. Students enrolled in the seminar are required to attend both the Saturday morning pre-sessions on February 20 and March 6, 2010, as well as the public lecture on the evening of March 25, 2010.
