This year’s public lecture will study two of our nation’s most influential justices – Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. and Louis D. Brandeis – and how their impact on the court continues to define our laws today.
During their tenure on the U.S. Supreme Court during the first four decades of the 20th century, the court’s docket changed dramatically, from a concentration on protecting property to a newfound awareness of individual liberties.
The opinions of Justices Holmes and Brandeis are key to understanding this transformation. In their dissents, they pointed the way to our modern beliefs in free speech, privacy and the protection of minorities.
Melvin I. Urofsky, this year’s Feaver-MacMinn Scholar, will explore this shift in his lecture on “The Legacy of Holmes and Brandeis.” He will also discuss the different personal characteristics of the two men considered among the greatest of all Supreme Court justices.
