Please Do Not Forward your OU E-Mail

Effective immediately we are REQUIRING all CLS students to check their OU Email using the OU Email interface only: http://email.ou.edu/

In previous semesters we gave students the option of checking their OU e-mail online or forwarding it to the e-mail address of their choice. A circumstance has arisen, however, where some Internet service providers and company e-mail servers are blocking any e-mail coming from the ou.edu domain. This means you may not be getting some e-mail that is being sent to you from OU.

This is due to SPAM attacks that appear to your Internet service provider or company e-mail server as originating within the OU domain. Users who forward their e-mail to outside accounts may have these forwarded e-mails refused by your Internet service provider or company e-mail server. OU/IT has no control over your company's or Internet service provider's e-mail rejection criteria. Because the practice of denying e-mail from SPAM sources is relatively new for ISPs and companies, most users who have been successfully forwarding their e-mail to off-campus sites in the past have not been affected until lately. There is no way of knowing when an ISP or company mail server applies this blocking software, thus we are requiring everyone to check their OU e-mail directly from the OU e-mail server, and we are asking you not to forward your OU e-mail to any other e-mail mailbox.

OU E-mail Check List

1. Check To See If You Are Already Setup Correctly

If you already know for sure that you are checking your e-mail directly from your OU E-mail Account and not forwarding it to another e-mail address, you do not have to do anything. You are ready to go for the upcoming semester.

  1. Send an e-mail to your OU e-mail address
  2. Logon to: http://email.ou.edu/
  3. If the test e-mail appears in your inbox you are setup OK
  4. If not, go to step 2.

2. Remove Your Forwarded E-Mail Address

If your OU e-mail is being forwarded to another e-mail address please follow these steps to remove it:

  1. Login to the OU Account Administration Page http://account.ou.edu/
  2. In the field, "Forward the above account to:" clear any forwarding e-mail address so the field is blank and click the "Disable forwarding" box
  3. Scroll down and enter your current password in the “Current Password” box which is required to make updates to your account
  4. At the bottom of the screen, click the "Update OUNet Information" button.

Testing Your OU E-Mail Account

  1. Send an e-mail to your OU e-mail address
  2. Logon to: http://email.ou.edu/
  3. If the test e-mail appears in your inbox you are setup OK
  4. If not, go back to step 2 and try to remove your forwarding address and save the changes.
