Course Overview
Sleep and dreams occupy approximately one third of our lives. This course is designed to review the history and current research regarding sleep. Theories of the purpose and significance of dreams will also be investigated.
Course Objectives
By the end of this course, the successful student will be able to:
- Recognize and identify major theories of sleep and dreams;
- Identify the neural anatomy of the brain involved in sleep;
- Understand the neurochemistry of sleep;
- Understand the basic clinical implications of sleep and dreams;
- Recognize the developmental aspects of sleep;
- Identify basic theories of dreaming;
- Understand basic theories of dream interpretation;
- Understand the importance of dreams in other cultures;
- Understand the universal metaphors and archetypes that occur In dreams;
- Understand the history of dream interpretation; and
- Demonstrate an ability to interpret his or her own dreams.
