Course Description
Shooting the American Male: Changing Images of Men in American Society, Flim, and Television is a seminar designed to bridge both film and gender studies or, more specifically, the newly emerging field of masculinity studies.

Cinema is now over 100 years old and television more than 50 years. This seminar will investigate how men have been “shot” and thus imagined and presented in American film and television. From John Barrymore to Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Stewart and on to Jack Nicholson, John Wayne, Eddie Murphy, Clint Eastwood, Robert DeNiro, Dustin Hoffman and others, including Homer Simpson and Jerry Seinfeld. We will consider the changing images and roles for men in American cinema and culture. The course will cover a variety of genres in film and television including: comedy, westerns, sports films, crime shows, and horror films.

Course Requirements
Participants will be expected to have seen at least half of the films and television shows before the seminar begins and to have begun our two books, finishing Heroes, Antiheroes, and Dolts before the course begins.

There will be a five to seven-page research paper due each of the two weeks and participants will be asked to make oral presentations in class on several topics agreed upon and complete several short in class writing assignments. There will be several guest speakers as well.

This seminar may be taken by OU undergraduates as an upper level elective.
