Research at Fears Lab

Historically research at the Donald G. Fears Structural Engineering Lab had been limited to pure structural research.

But in the last ten years the CEES geo-technical faculty have been increasing present at the Lab and in the last year faculty from the College of Architecture, Construction Science Department, have begun to perform research at Fears Lab.  The increased use of Fears Lab by other research group is an expression of our larger plan of increasing the relevance and impact of Fears Lab on our state.

The following figures and summaries illustrate some of the research that has been performed at the Donald G. Fears Structural Engineering Lab in the last six years.  This list is by no means comprehensive, but it does provide a reasonable overview of the research capabilities of the Lab.

Axial, Bending and Pressure Testing of Large Pipe Connections

Axial, Bending and Pressure Testing of Large Pipe Connections using the API 5C5 test.  The load envelope for this set of testing includes 5,000,000 lbs Tension or Compression, 1,800,000 lf-ft of moment and 6000 psi internal pressure.

Innovative Bracing System Using the Base Test Method

Bending Capacity of Cold Formed Steel Purlins with an Innovative Bracing System Using the Base Test Method.  These tests investigated the hypothesis that torsional bracing could effectively brace a purlin for Lateral-Torsional buckling.  56 of these tests were "traded" for the material to expand the Fears Lab high bay by 50%
