Commencement 2008 will be held at The Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium at 7p.m. as blue skies are forecasted throughout the weekend.
OU holds Commencement, the University-wide graduation ceremony, each year at the end of the spring semester to celebrate its graduates. All summer and December graduates and May graduation candidates participate in this ceremony. Degrees are officially conferred at Commencement. Filled with pageantry, this ceremony includes an address from OU President David Boren and the Commencement speaker. Doctoral degree candidates are recognized individually as they are hooded during the ceremony and undergraduate and master’s candidates are recognized as a group. The ceremony concludes with a gigantic fireworks display.
Each college also holds Convocation ceremonies in the spring, and many hold Convocations in December as well. College Convocation ceremonies provide an opportunity for students to celebrate with their specific college. At College Convocations, those receiving degrees will be recognized individually. Undergraduate and master’s candidates' names will be announced, they will have their picture taken and will be presented a diploma cover by their college dean. Some colleges recognize their doctoral candidates individually at Convocation ceremonies (please see complete Convocation schedules for details).
Graduation candidates are encouraged to attend both Commencement and their Convocation ceremony to have the complete graduation experience!
Caps and gowns are worn to both Commencement and Convocations unless otherwise noted on the Convocation schedule. Graduate students attend the Convocation for the college where they have done their major work.
