OU International Educational Travel Policies and Procedures

It is the policy of the University of Oklahoma that all international credit bearing programs that require students to travel outside of the United States follow the International Educational Travel Guidelines. A copy of President Boren’s directive, a copy of the guidelines, and the emergency response protocol required by the guidelines and copies of forms required by the guidelines may be obtained from the links below:

OU Risk Management & Registration

  • OU International Travel Application Form:  This form must be completed for all OU credit bearing programs that require students to travel outside of the United States. It must be approved by both the Dean of the college of record and the Vice Provost for the College of International Studies and remain on file in the Education Abroad office.  This completed form must be submitted no later than 45 days prior to the start date of the program.
  • Student Registration Upon receipt of the above OU International Travel Approval Form, the professor of record or college coordinator will be contacted by the Director of the Office of Education Abroad.  A link will be sent to the professor of record or the college coordinator so that participating students register within the central risk management database.  This is a required element of international education at OU and is the responsibility of the professor of record and/or the college coordinator to ensure that all students are registered by the deadline communicated from Education Abroad.
  • Insurance The above registration will enact the OU institutional insurance policy, which is required for all students going abroad on credit bearing programs through the University of Oklahoma.
  • Study Abroad Support Fee  The above registration will also result in a $35 study abroad support fee which will automatically be placed on the participating students' bursar bill.  This fee is designed to cover the cost and management of the risk management database and software.
  • US Department of State Travel Warnings: OU automatically suspends programming to countries under a US Department of State Travel Warning.  For information about how to petition the Safety and Security Council to conduct study abroad programming in these countries, please click here

All questions or concerns regarding the above policies should be directed to Dr. Zach Messitte, Dean for the College of International Studies. Questions regarding pre-travel orientation, faculty training and procedural concerns should be directed to the Office of Education Abroad.
