    Graduate Certificates


    A graduate certificate represents completion of a set of courses that provides mastery of a specific area of knowledge. A graduate certificate indicates an advanced, focused inquiry into a defined area of study and is recorded on the student’s transcript. For a degree student, a graduate certificate may indicate an area of specialization; for a professional, a graduate certificate may provide evidence of special expertise.

    Completion Requirements & Restrictions:

    • Completion of a minimum of 15 credit hours, with a grade average of B or higher, in the courses counted towards the certificate requirements.
    • Courses taken prior to a candidate’s matriculation to a graduate level program at the University of Oklahoma will not count toward the Certificate.
    • Students are not candidates for a degree
    • Students are not assured future admission to a degree program
    • Students may not be eligible for financial aid for Graduate Certificate coursework
    • Students are limited to the maximum number of hours required for the Graduate Certificate


    How to Apply:

    • Students should first contact the academic program offering the graduate certificate to learn about admission requirements.
    • Students who are currently enrolled in a graduate degree program and also wish to pursue a graduate certificate in a discipline outside their degree program should submit a completed OU Change of Program Request to Add the graduate certificate code.

    Global Studies Course Requirements


    CORE CURRICULUM (9 hours)

    • IAS 5113 - Field Seminar in International Studies
    • 6 hours of core international studies courses (choose from the following):
      • IAS 5503 - Theory and Practice of International Politics
      • IAS 5053 - Global History
      • IAS 5523 - Global Political Economy


    ELECTIVES (6 hours)

    • 6 hours of approved electives from a list as approved by the graduate liaison

    Area Studies Course Requirements


    CORE CURRICULUM (6 hours)

    • IAS 5113 - Field Seminar in International Studies
    • 3 hours of core international courses (choose from the following):
      • IAS 5503 - Theory and Practice of International Politics
      • IAS 5053 - Global History
      • IAS 5523 - Global Political Economy


    CONCENTRATIONS (9 hours)

    • 9 hours in one area from a list as approved by the graduate liaison:
      • Asia
      • Europe
      • Latin America
      • Middle East
