We choose a poverty stricken school in the OKC metro and donate educational Christmas presents to its children.
Read Across America
We arrange for our SOEA members to read Dr. Seuss books to children at a nearby Elementary School. We assist the Dean's Student Advisory Committee in operating a book fair in the Jeannine Rainbolt College of Education lobby.
Outreach to Teach
We clean, paint, landscape and generally improve an underserved school in the OKC metro.
Spring Clothes Drive
We collect clothing and personal items to be donated to the Salvation Army.
We volunteer for an education-related community service project.
University of Oklahoma SOEA Chapter Benefits and Opportunities
NEA provides $1,000,000.00 of professional liability coverage, the Educators Employment Liability Program, to protect local SOEA members whenever they are in a classroom. SOEA members only.
Access to the NEA Click & Save Program which offers discounts and coupons at a variety of department stores, restaurants, and companies. SOEA members only.
The opportunity to apply for the NEA-Retired Jack Kinnaman Memorial Scholarship annually in April. This $2,000.00 scholarship is awarded to a current and active member of a local Student Education Association chapter. SOEA members only.
The opportunity to wear the SOEA Graduation Cord at your commencement ceremony. SOEA members only.

Socialize with other students in the Jeannine Rainbolt College of Education, including students from various departments (Early Childhood, Elementary, Secondary, Special Education, etc.) and levels (Undergraduate, Graduate, and Doctoral.)
Meet Oklahoma Education Association personnel, local public school district superintendents, principles, and teachers.
Build relationships with professors, faculty advisors, and the Jeannine Rainbolt College of Education Dean’s staff.
Work hand-in-hand with officers and members from Kappa Delta Pi (KDP) and Student Council for Exceptional Students (SCEC), National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), and other organizations operating within the Jeannine Rainbolt College of Education.
Opportunities beyond the University of Oklahoma SOEA Chapter
Rallys and Marches at the State Capitol organized by OEA on behalf of public education.
Work with OEA and personnel at the Oklahoma State Capitol to pass or oppose education geared state questions and house bills. May include operating phone banks, handing out flyers, posting signs, etc.
Work with the Oklahoma Educator Credit Union (OECU), a frequent collaborator with OEA and SOEA and a provider of classroom grants to teachers.
State SOEA Fall and Spring Conferences that include workshops, free food and door prizes! Free to SOEA members only.
OEA Conference with motivational speakers held in October! Free to SOEA Members Only.
Participate in the State SOEA organized event "Outreach to Teach" in March! Free to SOEA members only.
Representation on the Dean's Student Advisory Committee (DSAC.) Local chapter President and/or Vice President only.
State SOEA Officer opportunities! You must be a local SOEA officer and an SOEA member for one year to be eligible to run for a State SOEA office (President, Vice President, Secretary, Legislative Representative, OEA Delegate, and NEA Delegate.)
Annual NEA Conferences with workshops and motivational speakers! You must be a local SOEA officer and an SOEA member to attend the NEA Conferences.
SOEA Graduation Cord Requirements
December Graduates must complete a full year of service with SOEA to purchase the SOEA Graduation Cord:
1. You must be an SOEA Member who has paid dues for the current academic year and the next academic year (ex: Grad Dec 2014, paid dues for 13-14 and 14-15)
2. You must attend 2 meetings per semester (2 meetings in Spring and 2 meetings in Fall)
3. You must attend 1 event per semester (1 event in Spring and 1 event in Fall)
Spring Graduates must complete a full year of service with SOEA to purchase the SOEA Graduation Cord:

Go to “Join NEA” on the right side of the page and click “Join Now.”
Select “Student Membership”
Select “Oklahoma” and “The University of Oklahoma” when filling out your personal information.
Use a debit or credit card to pay the $5 local chapter fee, $10 state chapter fee, and $15 national chapter fee ($30 total for each academic year)
Print two copies of your receipt, one copy for your records and one copy as proof of purchase and membership when you collect your SOEA card.
SOEA Cards now are mailed to you. If you do not receive your card, please contact our Faculty Advisor, Dr. Teresa DeBacker at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Paper Membership forms are also available upon request for those students wishing to pay with cash, check, or money order. Paper membership forms will be available at the monthly SOEA meetings. Payment will be due at the time the membership form is completed and submitted for processing.

Memberships expire on August 31st. SOEA memberships must be renewed in September of every new academic year in order for students to remain official SOEA members. Only official SOEA members are invited to attend the Fall and Spring SOEA Conferences, the OEA Conference in October, participate in Outreach to Teach, wear the SOEA cord at graduation, and are eligible to run for an SOEA office in February or be appointed to a SOEA Chair or Committee. So become an official member today!
