OU Opera Theatre: Mozart's Don Giovanni A Grand Opera

The University of Oklahoma’s University Theatre presents Don Giovanni in the grand style! Performances are offered for one weekend only at 8 p.m. March 1, 2, 3, and at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 4, in the Reynolds Performing Arts Center, 560 Parrington Oval, Historic Holmberg Hall. William Ferrara, serves as stage director and Jonathan Shames, artistic director and conductor. “Mozart's popular masterpiece is a rich mixture of drama, comedy and gorgeous music. We have an extraordinarily talented all- student cast and orchestra assembled for this production, with beautiful sets and costumes and wonderful technical support from University Theatre.  Don't miss it!” Ferrara said.

 

The story of the damnation of Don Juan has thrilled audiences for generations. Comedy, murder, revenge and the supernatural are combined with Mozart’s famous music to make an unforgettable theatrical experience. Students of history as well as music, drama and literature will be intrigued by the theme of decadence and class struggle set on the cusp of the French Revolution. This matinee will be a complete, fully-staged production with gorgeous costumes, sets and technically sophisticated projections. The opera will be sung in the original Italian, with supertitles in English projected above the stage in the beautiful performance hall of the Reynolds Performing Arts Center.

 

The cast consists of OU School of Music students.  Performing March 1 and 3:  William Browning (Don Giovanni); Mark Billy (Commendatore); Moriah Diers (Zerlina); Evereich (Leporello), Nicole Robertson (Donna Anna); James Stoia (Don Ottavio); Madeline Schaefer (Donna Elvira); and Ryne Young (Masetto).  Performing March 2 and 4: Andra Erbar (Zerlina); Clint Gilbert (Masetto); Alexander Krenz (Leporello); Michelle Price (Donna Anna); Joseph Ruel (Don GIovanni); Perry Sook (Commendatore); Jack Swanson (Don Ottavio); and Jessica Tucker (Donna Elvira).

 

The production staff includes: William Ferrara, stage director, Jonathan Shames, artistic director and conductor; Kasey Allee-Foreman, costume designer and production manager; Rick Reeves, scenic, lighting and projection designer; Alan Hiserodt, sound designer; Scott Henkels, technical director; Rick Zielinski, opera chorus director; Lorne Richstone, vocal coach; Chris Westover, assistant conductor; Jeremy Lindberg, choreographer; Andres Isaacson, rehearsal accompanist, and Amy Oxley, stage manager; Rich Taylor, executive producer. Jonathan Shames will conduct performances on March 1, 2 & 3; Chris David Westover, is symphony conductor for the March 4 performance.

 

The University of Oklahoma Fine Arts Center is located at, 563 Elm Ave., in the OU Arts District! Tickets are $17 for adults; $14 for OU faculty/staff and seniors; and $10 for students and may be purchased by calling the Fine Arts College Ticket Service at (405) 325-4101, Monday through Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.  The box office is located in the Catlett Music Center, 500 West Boyd in the OU Arts District.  For accommodations on the basis of a disability call (405) 325-4101.


OU Receives Major Gift of Native American Art

University of Oklahoma President David L. Boren announced today that the university has received one of the most important private collections of Native American art in the country.  The gift comes to OU from the private collection of James T. Bialac of Arizona.
