Arts Alliance

Arts Alliance annual Chili Bowl fundraiser.

During the Fall of 2008, SoAAH established a fund raising entity, the Arts Alliance.  The primary focus of the Arts Alliance is to raise funds to support student research that might not be possible with funding only coming from University resources.  This support may be provided to students in the form of supplies for studio artists, money for travel expenses to conduct scholarly research, funds to exhibit art or to participate in workshops, all on a national and international level.

Arts Alliance funds have provided travel support for numerous students to study and exhibit their work in Italy, France, Germany, Mexico, Helsinki, Finland, Latvia and Estonia.  Several students (studio and art history alike) are attending the University’s Arezzo program in Italy and many other study aboard programs.

Helping Students

SoAAH Contemporary Sculpture Graduate Students Alex Knox and Mike Hill.

“Mike Hill and myself, are contemporary sculpture graduate students and will be traveling to Finland, Latvia and Estonia for a month this summer to attend an iron casting conference and a stone carving symposium. With financial assistance from the SoAAH, Mike and I will have the opportunity to meet artists from other countries and work side by side with them.  We are looking forward to gaining a cultural and academic understanding in terms of creating art outside of the U.S.”
-Alex Knox

“This summer with assistance from the SoAAH, I’ll be traveling to Germany to conduct research for my thesis, which involves a study of Medieval Baptismal Font iconography.  I have been granted permission by four larger cathedrals and two smaller in Germany to take photographs.”

Bernard Addo in a drawing class in the SoAAH.

My name is Bernard Addo. I was born and raised in Ghana, West Africa.  Watching cartoons growing up gave me this desire to be a cartoonist.   Chances are very slim for artists in Africa, but luckily for me my father helped me move to the States at the age of 13.  Following my dream would have been impossible after high school had it not been for this scholarship from the School of Art.  I feel very focused now that I am at OU and I have the School of Art & Art History as my backbone.

My name is Heather Read, and I’m an Art History graduate student.  I’ve recently returned to SoAAH after a two-week trip to France.  The Arts Alliance was able to provide me with a grant to help fund my travels.  I am writing my Master’s thesis on Henri Matisse’s Chapel of the Holy Rosary—a chapel designed entirely by Matisse.  Les Héritiers Matisse, the foundation that maintains the intellectual property of this modern master, granted me the rare privilege to photograph the Chapel.
