Professional Writing Overview

A spot on the New York Times Best Sellers list or an Academy Award for Best Screenplay could be in the future of a Professional Writing student. The Professional Writing (PW) program at the Gaylord College will prepare you for a career as a freelance author of books, short stories, magazine articles or screenplays.

Careers

Professional Writing graduates find a variety of employment options: they can be self-employed, selling writing to others for publication, or they may work for a company, government agency or individual, or on a “for hire” basis. Professional writers may also work as publications specialists, assuming responsibility for various publications of a company or organization; as editors, reading and recommending manuscripts for a publishing house; or as columnists, writing critiques, reviews and columns.

Internships

When you are ready to look for an internship or your first job, your academic adviser is ready to help you with your resume and cover letter.

Gaylord College also has its own liaison in the Career Services department on the OU Campus! This provides students internship opportunities for credit/non-credit as well as offers resume writing workshops, mock interviews, job search classes and HIREsooner!
