Top Reasons to Choose OU

Unique Learning Opportunities

OU’s academic community offers incomparable learning opportunities that will prepare you for success after college. With over 150 degree options, students with any academic interest can find the right fit.

Facilities: During President Boren’s tenure, almost $2 billion in construction projects have been completed or are underway on our campuses. Students have access to technology and learning environments that rival private industries such as our oil rig simulator (the only of its kind at a university) in the Engineering Practice Facility, our student-run advertising agency in the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication and our stock market trading floor in the Michael F. Price College of Business. These are just a few examples of how our facilities will help prepare you for your career and set you apart from your peers.

Research: All of our undergraduate students get the opportunity to work side by side with professors and industry leaders on the most cutting-edge research. OU achieved the Carnegie Foundation’s highest tier of research activity classification, the first time a public institution in Oklahoma has received this outstanding recognition.

Rich Tradition

The Seed Sower is an emblem of our first president, David Ross Boyd. Boyd walked across the Oklahoma prairies sowing the seeds of education and literally planting many trees throughout the region. Our Seed Sower statue stands at the entrance to the beautiful South Oval as a reminder that the Sooner community continues to sow important seeds that will blossom for generations to come.

There is nothing quite like hearing 85,000 devoted fans chant “Boomer Sooner” at OU football games (and many other OU events). In the “Oklahoma Land Run,” settlers from across the globe, seeking free land, made their way to Oklahoma Territory to stake their claim to a new life. One of the few rules to claiming land was that all participants were to start at the same time. Those who went too soon were called “Sooners.” Those who started on time were called “Boomers.” Eventually, “Sooner” came to be a synonym of Progressivism. The Sooner is an “energetic individual who travels ahead of the human procession.” He is prosperous, ambitious, and a “can-do” individual. And Oklahoma is the Sooner State, the land of opportunity,

Visionary Leadership

OU is fortunate to have a president, David L. Boren, who continues to have a significant impact on our campus. He is student-centered and accessible. In fact, President Boren is one of only a few university presidents to teach a class each semester.

As a Rhodes Scholar, former Oklahoma governor and U.S. Senator, he has a global perspective and international connections.

Active Student Life

Get involved: With more than 450 ways to get involved on campus, you can create your own story at the University of Oklahoma. We provide the tools necessary to be leaders on campus and in life after college.

Giving back: At OU, we understand the importance of giving back. We have an entire office devoted solely to helping students find ways to serve our community. Sooners strive to set an example and helping others is an important component of this goal.

Personal Attention

Since every member of the Sooner family is unique, we provide individualized support services to help students reach their goals. With a student-to-faculty ratio of just 18:1 and an average class size of 32, you will interact with faculty and staff members who make it a top priority to be available to students. Through programs like the Writing Center, free tutoring, one-on-one academic advising each semester and classes that help you with your transition to college, you will receive valuable assistance from your freshman to your senior year. As a graduate, you will also have access to our career services resources to ensure you continue to excel.

Professor availability: The average class size at OU is just 32 students and less than 4% of OU classes have more than 100 students. It is possible to build relationships with your professors. Our faculty members make helping students and being available a priority.

Vibrant Community

Norman, OK: Living in Norman allows you to experience the best of both worlds — a small town community with big city resources. It is a classic college town, with a thriving local music scene and boutique shopping on Campus Corner, a historic district within walking distance of campus. Norman is filled with independent cafes, eateries and other places to meet with friends or sit and study.

OKC: From Norman it’s just a 20-minute trek to Oklahoma City, a major metropolitan area. Oklahoma City provides students with exciting entertainment options like Bricktown, the river canal and the Thunderdome. It also provides a great job market for internships and full-time positions. Global community: OU is truly a global community, with international students from over 100 countries represented. In fact, our International Programs Center was created to enrich the international experience on campus. You will have the opportunity to hear from notable international leaders and also get to know exchange students as part of our OU Cousins program. We encourage our students to study abroad — last year alone, OU students studied in more than 35 countries around the world.

Sooner Family

OU is truly a family. As a Sooner, you will become part of a community that invests in your success, and works hard to make sure you have the best college experience possible. Our students, faculty and staff are warm, helpful and accessible. It might sound cheesy, but when walking around campus, you are sure to see a friendly face. From your very first day on campus, you will make lifelong friends and form genuine relationships that will continue even after graduation.

Outstanding On-Campus Housing

We guarantee on-campus housing to all freshmen and living on campus means you are at the center of the university experience. Your friends are close by, classes are within walking distance and more than 20 restaurants are conveniently located across campus. More details here.

Top-Tier Education at Affordable Cost

You can certainly reach your goal of becoming a Sooner largely because we are committed to keeping the door of opportunity open for all qualified students.
