Apply to the Graduate Program

Admission to the graduate program is based on several criteria including:

• Grades from previous courses (minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale)

• Results of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE)

• Three letters of recommendation evaluating academic performance and potential

• A statement of purpose composed by the student

• The student’s previous experience including a research project, if applicable, and completion of an undergraduate degree which includes coursework in math and science for MS applicants.  For Ph.D. applicants an MS degree with completed thesis is required.

International students whose native language is not English must also meet the University of Oklahoma’s minimum TOEFL scores.

Applications for fall admission are reviewed in February, and offers of admission and financial aid are extended in March. In order to be considered for admission with financial aid, application materials should be received by February 1. Further applications for admission in the fall semester without financial aid will be reviewed May 1st.  Applications for admission in the Spring semester are due Sept. 1st.

2. Fill Out a School of  Geology and Geophysics Application

3. Make sure all references have received the webform email notification fand are clear on the deadlines.

4. Request that your GRE scores and transcripts be sent to the School of Geology and Geophysics.

 

Note: It is very important to make contact with potential advisors as soon as possible. On the Geology and Geophysics application there is a place to indicate potential advisors. This does not obligate you to work with the particular faculty member you indicated on the form, but it does help alert faculty to potential students and allows the admissions committee to know that there is a potential match between student and faculty member.

Degree Requirements
The School of Geology and Geophysics offers programs leading to the M.S. degree in geology, M.S. degree in geophysics, and the Ph.D. degree in geology. Some important aspects of these degree programs are described in the linked documents below.

New Student Orientations:
If you are accepted to the geology and geophysics program at OU, there are a number of workshops and training sessions you need to be aware of.  The dates and times of these programs vary--but you will be notified of the sessions you are required to attend, in addition, they can be found on the Graduate College Website.

 

Teaching Assistant Orientation
All graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) must attend one or both of the teaching assistant training programs offered by the Learning and Teaching Program prior to commencing their teaching responsibilities. However, GTAs who do not have substantive contact with students (e.g., those who only do grading) are exempt from this requirement. International GTAs must attend the International Teaching Assistants Training Program; all GTAs (international and domestic) need to attend the Teaching Assistant Orientation (TAO). Ethics in Research Workshop: All graduate students who receive an assistantship or fellowship must attend this workshop.  http://gradweb.ou.edu/Current/SpecialEvents/RCR/

International Student Orientation:  All international students who will be teaching assistants are required to attend the International Teaching Assistant Training as well as the Teaching Assistant Orientation.
