What is iTunes U?
iTunes U is a part of the iTunes Store featuring free lectures, language lessons, audiobooks, and more, that you can enjoy on your iOS device, Mac or PC. Explore educational audio and video files from top universities, museums and public media organizations from around the world. In order to take advantage of iTunes U, users must first have iTunes installed on their computer or iOS device. iTunes is available for both Mac OS X and Windows operating systems. A more immersive and engaging experience is found when using the iTunes U App - a free download from the iOS App store for iPad.
OU on iTunes U allows the University of Oklahoma to distribute world-class educational content to our students, and to the world at large. Watch Rufus Fears give his famous "Freedom" lectures, get an inside look at the National Weather Center, learn more about the One University Digital Initiative and more! OU on iTunes U is one of many tools used by the University of Oklahoma for the creation and delivery of engaging digital content for use in and outside of the classroom.
All OU colleges, schools, departments, faculty, and staff members are eligible to upload content to OU on iTunes U. Students and student organizations may request an account for uploading content to OU on iTunes U but must have a faculty/staff sponsor responsible for their account.
What Does it Do?
iTunes U is primarily a vehicle for the delivery of rich media content, however, faculty have the ability to choose how to deliver it.
|Audio & Video Files||Presentations||Documents & PDFs|
|iBooks & ePubs||Web Links||iTunes Content|
All of these media assets can be delivered through an iTunes U Course, or an iTunes U Collection depending upon the desired utilization of the material.
Collections in iTunes U:
Collections are essentially playlists of content designed to be downloaded to any device that supports iTunes. Once downloaded this content is stored on the device for offline viewing. Collections can contain Audio, Video, and PDF documents only. A collection is useful in providing supplemental material to reference with your class, but does not give the instructor the ability to provide context or instruction to accompany the resources.
Courses in iTunes U:
Courses in iTunes U are basically collections of content that have been framed within the context of your Course Outline. Courses can utilize all of the file types above, and allow the instructor to assign tasks, or to give instructional conext to the files, and can even allow the instructor to schedule when content is made available to the students in line with their course outline for instance. Designed to be viewed on an iOS device with the iTunes U App, courses allow for interactivity, and provide the most immersive learning experience for the student. It should be noted that if viewed outside of the iTunes U App, the course will be displayed as a collection without the supporting contextual material.
