WHAT IS AN OMBUDSPERSON?

An ombudsperson is a "designated neutral" dispute resolver. The ombudsperson is not an advocate for anyone, nor does he/she determine right or wrong. The job of the ombudsperson is to aid in the resolution of problems in a non-adversarial, non-litigious manner. The ombudsperson has broad powers to investigate and to make recommendations but no authority to make or reverse a decision. The ombudsperson's powers are those of reason and persuasion.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE UNIVERSITY OMBUDS OFFICE?

The University Ombuds Office facilitates understanding, communication and conflict resolution
among University faculty and staff. The office serves as a prompt, impartial and confidential means
of facilitating dialogue between parties, and as a means, apart from the formal grievance procedures,
of resolving differences. The mission of the Ombuds Office is to assist in ensuring that all faculty and staff
receive fair and equitable treatment within the university.

HOW CAN THE OMBUDS OFFICE BE OF ASSISTANCE?

The Ombuds Office helps resolve problems and conflicts, especially those which are not being adequately addressed through usual channels.

The Ombuds Office provides informal services, operating outside the usual review and/or appeal procedure.

The Ombuds Office is independent and impartial, taking a nonaligned role when hearing a problem or complaint.

The Ombuds Office provides confidential services, revealing a visitors' identity only with that person's permission.


AN OMBUDSPERSON CAN HELP YOU BY...


Listening carefully to concerns and complaints:

Helping analyze the situation;

Identifying and explaining relevant university policies, procedures, and problem-solving channels;

Helping define options;

Looking into a concern, including talking with involved parties, and reviewing pertinent documents
and policies;

Mediating discussions between individuals or groups in a dispute or problem situation;

Following up to make sure a concern is resolved or referred to official due process procedures;

Recommending changes in university policies or procedures.
