NORMAN – Cole E. Townsend, a University of Oklahoma Honors sophomore majoring in letters with a minor in Spanish, has been selected for the Fulbright Summer Institute to study in Scotland at the University of Dundee and the University of Strathclyde.

Townsend, the son of Cara Crawford and Ronnie Townsend, both of Ada, was selected from a nationwide applicant pool experience the United Kingdom on the five-week summer program. As a participant in the Fulbright Scotland Summer Institute, Townsend hopes to gain a more detailed understanding of how the history of Scotland has shaped its current social structures, with a particular focus on the relationship between medicine and society in the nation’s past and present cultures.

“The OU community is very proud of this important recognition given to Cole Townsend.  The Fulbright Summer Institute awards are highly competitive, and Cole’s achievement ranks him among the best students in the country,” said OU President David L. Boren.

In addition to his academic pursuits, Townsend is actively involved in a number of organizations on campus, including Crimson Club, the Oklahoma Teaching Alliance, President’s Community Scholars, and the Oklahoma Creativity Festival. Devoted to finding and implementing solutions for sustainable international development, he is a member of Global Medical Brigades, with which he has traveled to Honduras to provide health care to under-resourced communities.

Upon learning of his selection, Townsend said, “I was thrilled to be selected to take part in a program that was perfectly tailored toward the broad education I seek at the University of Oklahoma and that will also allow me to focus on the interaction between medicine and society throughout Scotland’s history. Additionally, I look forward to this opportunity that will allow me to discover how Scotland’s past has shaped its current social structures while letting me simultaneously become an ambassador for both the University of Oklahoma and the United States.

Created by treaty in 1948, the US-UK Fulbright Commission is the only bilateral, transatlantic scholarship program, offering awards and summer programs for study or research in any field, at any accredited U.S. or U.K. university. The commission is part of the Fulbright program conceived by Sen. J. William Fulbright in the aftermath of World War II to promote leadership, learning and empathy between nations through educational exchange.

The Fulbright Commission selects participants through a rigorous application and interview process. In making these awards, the commission looks not only for academic excellence but a focused application, a range of extracurricular and community activities, demonstrated ambassadorial skills, a desire to further the Fulbright program and a plan to give back to the recipient’s home country upon returning.
