Welcome from Dr. John Blebea, Program Director and Chair of Surgery

John Blebea, MD, MBA

Welcome to the website for our newly-accredited fellowship in vascular surgery at the University of Oklahoma – Tulsa.   Our two year fellowship program emphasizes learning in the context of providing the best possible patient care.

Vascular fellows participate in the diagnosis, preoperative care, operative procedure, and postoperative care for the majority of patients treated on the vascular teaching service.   Fellows provide care to a broad range of patients from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.

The senior vascular surgery fellow is the leader of the team, supervising the junior vascular fellow, rotating surgical residents, and medical students.  The fellow stays in close contact with faculty who expect the fellow to know patients well and to provide patient status updates and recommendations for patient care.

Vascular surgery fellows have important teaching responsibilities to the general surgery residents and medical students rotating on the vascular service.  Fellows assist general surgery residents in integrating noninvasive vascular studies into the overall evaluation of patients with vascular disease.  In addition, fellows prepare and present at regularly scheduled academic conferences.

The vascular fellowship program has a strong research component.  Each fellow is required to complete a research project as part of training.  Clinical projects will extend the fellow’s clinical patient-centered experience to an analysis of how patient care was rendered and how it may be improved in the future in comparison with the experience reported by others.   Our goal is for each fellow to present at a regional/national scientific meeting and to publish two manuscripts in a peer-reviewed journal during the course of training.

The University of Oklahoma - Tulsa vascular fellowship program offers a focused clinical training experience and opportunities for research in a supportive academic environment. If you have never visited Tulsa, it is a great place to live and raise a family. On behalf of our department, thank you for your interest in our program
