Writing Groups

Faculty Writing Group

In addition to consultation and working one-on-one with writers, the Writing Center can help writers by facilitating writing groups and workshops. Some of our groups are lead by writing center consultants, but for others, we simply provide the setting and the support, while the group members take the lead.

Writing groups won’t all work the same way. Some writing groups will share drafts with one another and provide a necessary audience and means of critique during the writing process. Some will discuss their writing and struggles. Some will meet simply to serve as an external means of accountability for getting writing done, or as support to make sure that writing is not something that the members have to give up writing due to busy lives. A writing group should form to best serve the needs and goals of its members.

Current Writing Groups

Graduate Writing Group

This group meets every Tuesday evening at 7:30 in Wagner Hall (room 280). We support each other by setting goals and regularly sharing writing. The feedback from the interdisciplinary group helps us see our projects in new ways, and share information across departments about expectations for graduate level writing. Graduate students from all departments are welcome. For more information contact Moira Ozias at mozias@ou.edu.

Creative Writers Group: OU Write Club

This group meets weekly for members to talk about their writing, struggles they are having as writers, and events that are being held in the area for creative writers. Writers of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction are all welcome to come share their writing or just talk.  The group also sponsors a bi-weekly open mic night that's open to writers far and wide.  For more information on the group visit their Facebook page: OU Write Club.

Carrots and Sticks Dissertation Group

This group meets weekly on Thursday mornings to encourage members to make progress on their dissertation. For more information, contact Robin Stroud at rshroud@ou.edu. (Guest blog post by the Carrots & Sticks group.)
