COMMUNICATION & SOCIAL COGNITION DIVISION
Annual Business Meeting ~ November 12, 2004 ~       Chicago Hilton, Chicago IL

I.            In attendance at 3:30 PM were:

R Tamborini, K Halone, S Jones, M Mitchell-Turner, S Sargent, D Cai, C Hullett, C Miller, E Fink, R Francis, Y Kang, N Palomares, N Wong, R. Smith, K Long, J Banas,    J Delaney, R Korba, L Deatrick, S Chung, L Janusik, J Dillard, C Berger, M Pfau, D Roskos-Ewoldson, L Dinauer, and perhaps 10 others not signing the attendance sheet.

II.         Approval of 2003 Minutes: Susanne Jones

Susanne passed out the minutes from the 2003 NCA convention in Miami, FL. Since Edward Fink did not notice any minor typos this time around, the minutes were unanimously approved without delay.

III.       Report from the Chair:  Susanne Jones

A.     Susanne announced that CSC membership now stands at 240, which means NCA will give us $240 for operations for 2004-2005.

B.     Susanne also announced that the NCA legislative council has approved the formation of a new nonverbal division which will offer paneling opportunities for CSC members.

C.     Susanne informed us that we would be electing a new 3rd Vice-Chair for the Research Committee (RC), whose duty it would be to help organize the paper review process, and  then eventually move up the ladder behind Deborah Cai, Craig Hullett, and Robin Nabi to become RC Chair, then CSC division Vice-Chair Elect, and eventually CSC Chair (in 2010).

IV.        Election

A.     Kelby Halone on behalf of the Executive Committee had solicited nominees from two distinguished members of the CSC division, Michael Pfau and David Roskos-Ewoldson, both of whom had graciously agreed to have their names included on the ballot for the RC 3rd Vice-Chair. Ron Tamborini pointed out how the quality of these two nominees reflected most favorably on the health of the CSC division.

B.     Further nominations were then solicited from the floor; Susanne Jones nominated Rachel Smith, whereapon several others seconded the nomination and Rachel’s name was added to the ballot. All three candidates were present.

C.     After each candidate was briefly acknowledged, ballots were passed out to all members in attendance and the voting took place. Susanne Jones later announced the election winner: David Roskos-Ewoldson

V.           Miscellaneous Announcements

A.     Kelby announced that since we were granted divisionhood in 2003, we now have new     by-laws (developed by the Executive Committee), which he then passed out to the meeting.

B.     Claude Miller, CSC Secretary, presented two options for a new CSC Website, one using a standard NCA template, and another using a new prototype design. Members voted not to go with the standard NCA template, but rather to go with a customized design linked to the NCA Website. Claude volunteered to finish putting the CSC Web pages together and act as Webmaster for the coming year. It was suggested that the job of Webmaster would fall to the CSC Secretary in future years as well.

C.     Susanne welcomed Monique Mitchell-Turner as the new CSC Chair.

D.     On behalf of the Executive Committee and all of the CSC members, Ron Tamborini thanked Susanne Jones for her service to the Division over the past year.

VI.        Paneling of Papers: Monique Mitchell-Turner

A.     Monique mentioned that there were several minor problems involving All Academic, such as delays in getting feedback for papers, and long download times. However, CSC did not have as much trouble with All Academic as other divisions did this year.

B.     The RC was impressed with the quality of CSC papers and, up to this point in the 2004 convention, there was heavy attendance for all of our panels. Several sessions experienced standing room only. Craig said he would see about getting us larger rooms in Boston.

C.     The CSC Division is growing in both size and quality. Of 55 papers submitted, 36 (78%) were accepted and paneled this year (74% last year).

D.     This year we co-sponsored one panel (on gender and social cognition) with the interpersonal division. We have co-paneled in the past and plan to do more of it in the future.

VII.     Awards Presentation:  Susanne Jones

A.     Top Papers

1.      The top student paper went to Yahui Kang (Penn) for “The Impact of Emotion on Processing Social Influence Messages.” Yahui was presented with a certificate and a plaque, and it was announced that she will also be given a cash (?) award.

2.      A top 3 paper went to Charles Berger (UC Davis) who was recognized for his paper, “Slippery Slopes to Apprehension: Rationality and the Processing of Graphic Depictions of Increasingly Threatening Trends.” Professor Berger was present to receive his certificate and plaque.

3.      Another top 3 paper was awarded to David D. Henningsen (Northern Illinois) and Mary Lynn M Henningsen (Northern Illinois) for their paper, “Do Groups Know what They Don't Know? Dealing with Missing Information in Decision-making Groups.” Lynn was present to receive their certificates and plaques.

4.      A third top paper was awarded to Claude Miller (Oklahoma) and Mark Landau (Arizona) for their paper, “Communication and the Causes and Costs of Terrorism: A Terror Management Theory Perspective.” Claude was present to the award.

B.     Research Publication Awards

1.      The CSC Book Award for 2004 went to . . . [I didn’t catch this part]

2.      The 2004 CSC Top Article Award went to Mary Beth Oliver (Penn State), Ronald Jackson II (Penn State), Celnisha Dangerfield (Penn State), and Ndidi Moses (Connecticut) for their 2004 Journal of Communication article “The Face of Crime: Viewers' Memory of Race-Related Facial Features of Individuals Pictured in the News.” None of the authors were present.

VIII.        New Business

A.     Stephanie Sargent announced that NCA VP Elect, Dan O’Hair (Oklahoma), had selected the theme for the NCA 2005 convention to be held at the Marriot Boston. The theme will be “Health of the Discipline.”

1.      Each affiliation/division will have the same number of slots as the previous year. We were told 10 for this year, but ended up with 11, and we may get more if warranted next year.

2.      We should not have the same problems with the All Academic program. It’s supposed to have its problems fixed and be more user-friendly. The new program will feature a “help” button, and we should be able to fix glitches on submitted papers without major Web hassles. They are also supposed to add a “delinquent” button for reviewers (so that panel planners may move forward with a decision based on only 2 reviewers).

B.     A signup sheet was circulated by Deborah Cai, RC Chair, for paper reviewers, panel chairs, and panel respondent volunteers for 2005.

1.      Ed Fink suggested that we should shoot for less papers per panel (4 instead of 5), and have more panels with fewer papers.

2.      Monique noted that we need more division members to get more slots, however, we can also use the co-sponsor option to panel more papers with other divisions.

3.      Ron suggested that we should think about scheduling the CSC business meeting outside of normal hours so as not to take up one of our allotted slots.

The meeting adjourned at 4:45 PM.
