Abstract

Providing high-quality news and information to the U.S. forces is an important part of every military public affairs practitioner's mission (AFIS, 2001). Over the course of the last decade, the military has begun to use the Internet to disseminate news to both its internal and external audiences. Utilizing the niche theory, this study investigates whether the Internet is displacing broadcast and print mediums' roles as primary sources of news and information for active-duty military members. Results of a pilot study show that the military members regarded the Internet as the best source for news and information and the most relied on in comparison to broadcast and print mediums.
