Introduction

Embedding Journalists in Military Combat Units:
During the Invasion and Occupation of Iraq

The Department of Defense "Short Course" in Communication is an 8-week graduate and under-graduate level curriculum designed to provide new insight on military communication awareness and research.

The 05-A DoD Class participated in a "Capstone Project" for the Department of Defense, and the University of Oklahoma during the Oct 18 to Dec 10, 2004 class. An Army, Navy, Marine, Air Force and DoD civilian team of ten seasoned military experts contributed in this research project covering the topic of "Embedding Journalists in Military Combat Units: During the Invasion and Occupation of Iraq."

The project looked at the prospect of embed journalist giving more favorable coverage based on theorems related to uncertainty reduction, organizational culture and more. New casts were reviewed from CNN, CBS and NBC for 15 days during the initial invasion and also during the subsequent occupation.
