Academic Interests: The study of nonverbal relational messages, conversation involvement and dominance, and dyadic adaptation patterns. Research examining human deception, nonverbal communication, and detection technologies with a goal of automating the detection of deception and identifying the availability of different cues in different modes of communication, including linguistic analysis, and video analysis based on kinesic behaviors associated with the hands and face.

Professor Burgoon Joined OU in 2007 on a part-time basis as Distinguished Visiting Professor with the Department of Communication and the Center for Applied Social Research.
