University of Oklahoma faculty members on any OU campus who are planning to take students abroad need to follow the University of Oklahoma’s Emergency Protocol for Safety and Uniformity on Study Abroad. This protocol outlines the procedures and requirements that must be followed for safety, liability and recording-keeping reasons. The Office of Education Abroad on the Norman campus is the central clearinghouse for compliance.
All students being taken abroad are entered into a central database. In addition to record keeping, Education Abroad serves as a resource and training facility for faculty leading study abroad trips. Professors should feel free to contact Jack Hobson if there are questions about the Emergency Protocol or planned trips abroad.
Training for faculty members who have been approved to take students abroad is done each semester as needed. It is important that deans, directors and department chairs inform their faculty about university policies regarding programs taught abroad and refer any questions to Education Abroad. Legal Counsel and Risk Management advise Education Abroad on certain aspects of this training.
The exchange agreement that is signed between the University of Oklahoma and a partner university abroad usually contains a clause on faculty exchanges and research collaboration. If you are interested in making connections with one of our partner universities for either purpose, please contact Jack Hobson, Director of Education Abroad.
Faculty who are traveling abroad for academic reasons are encouraged to make contact with partner universities abroad to discuss topics of mutual interest.
