The Sidney DeVere Brown Award for East Asian History

The Department of History is pleased to announce an award for undergraduate history majors interested in East Asian history.  This award is possible thanks to a generous gift from Dr. Sidney DeVere Brown, OU Emeritus Professor of Japanese History.  One award of $2500 will be made to a history major who demonstrates a sincere commitment to the study of East Asian history. 


Applicants who wish to use the funds for the purpose of participating in an OU exchange program or an approved non-OU exchange program to East Asia will be given priority, but all history majors are eligible to apply.  The areas that will be considered for the purposes of the award are China, Japan, Korea and Southeast Asia.    History majors must be enrolled at OU at the time of application.  Seniors may apply to use the award during the year following their graduation.Applications are due on March 1, 2010. Applicants should send the following materials to Professor Garret Olberding, Department of History, DAHT 403a:    


  1. A one- to two-page statement of purpose that describes the student’s interest in and commitment to the field of Asian history OR the proposed study abroad and how that plan contributes to the student’s study of history and future goals    
  2. The names of two history faculty (at least one non-Asian specialist) who would be willing to act as references (Note: you do not need to obtain letters of recommendation from faculty, only their approval to be contacted by the award committee as a reference)    
  3. A copy of the most recent OU transcript    
  4. If you have already been accepted into an exchange program, please include documentation of your acceptance. If you are still waiting to hear about acceptance, please provide documentation showing you have applied to a program (such as confirmation of application receipt)
