Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) has been available for decades for just this purpose. But costs and the requisite level of technological sophistication have inhibited wide-spread adoption of EDI. The Internet has created opportunities for EDI alternatives, including Internet EDI (Web EDI) and exchanges.
