Community Counseling Program:
Description of Courses

EDPY 5033 Introduction to Educational Research Methods. An introduction to major methods of scholarship and research in education, including historical, descriptive, survey and experimental techniques; and to assist persons to become perceptive consumers of research.

EIPT 5113 Educational Psychology of Human Development. Human development will be surveyed from conception to death. There are three major goals: an overview of the major developmental characteristics and processes across the life span; a survey of current research and theories; an opportunity to apply the knowledge acquired to educational and counseling settings.

EDPY 5213 Group Administered Tests. Survey of standardized tests of intelligence, aptitudes, interests, attitudes, and personality traits; selection, use, and interpretation of such tests. Provision for the interests of counselors and guidance workers rather than classroom teachers.

EDPY 5234 Individual Intelligence Testing. Didactic instruction dealing with the rationale, purpose, and ethics involved in individual intelligence testing plus experiential training in the administration, scoring, and interpretation of standardized intelligence tests. Emphasis is on the Wechslers scales.

EDPY 5253 Personality Assessment. Theories of personality testing and of personality. Students will acquire the skills requisite to administer a variety of personality tests used in community agencies and be able to interpret and write reports on findings.

EDPY 5410 Occupational Information - Career Development. Methods of preparing informational files for student use; nature of educational and occupational information, job classification, sources of information, and occupational surveys and trends. Theories of career development; techniques of job and occupational analysis; individual experiences of reporting client career development.

EDPY 5423 Theories and Techniques of Counseling. Introduction to stages in the counseling process; interviewing skills; counseling objectives; appropriate strategies. Common theories of counseling and psychotherapy and ethical considerations in counseling are considered.

EDPY 5430 Theories and Techniques of Group Counseling. Introduction to group dynamics with emphasis on counseling and consultation. Surveys theories and group techniques and their applicability. Experience in conducting and participating in a counseling group is included.

EDPY 5463 Multicultural Counseling. Consideration of the effects of cultural, ethnic, and/or language differences between counselor and counselee in the helping process. Sensitization to minority cultural values. Methods for enhancing multicultural communication.

EDPY 5470 Current Topics in Counseling. Focus is on current topics of interest in various counseling settings, such as child abuse, stress management, substance abuse, etc.

EDPY 5483 Behavior Disorders. A diagnostically-oriented course in abnormal behavior stressing standard nosology exemplified by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (most recent revision) of the American Psychiatric Association.

EDPY 5910 Practicum in Community Counseling. Two semesters required. The first semester also focuses on Professional Issues such as ethics in counseling and assessment. The second semester focuses on Counseling Theories.

EDPY 5920 Internship in Community Counseling. This is a two semester course that includes a placement with a community agency.

EDPY 6453 Family Counseling. Examination of counseling approaches for helping distressed marriages and families with emphasis on the family as a system. Role play practice in problem assessment and using various techniques and interventions.

EDPY 6463 Marital Therapy. Examination of issues related to marital relationships and the treatment of dysfunctional relationships. Assessment and intervention techniques are addressed.
Additional elective courses are available through the program and the department to enable the student to qualify for licensure as a Professional Counselor (LPC).
