Advisors:
Your advisor is a key person in your doctoral experience.
This individual will help you plan your
course of study, decide upon and conduct your research, and
in general assist you in your
professional development. Typically, within the first and
second year of the program of study,
forms are completed and an advisory conference is held. It
is necessary to decide upon your
committee to hold this conference (see next page). Advisors
are assigned upon entry into the
program. Should it become evident that you and your advisor
do not share the same interests in
research, it is possible to switch to a different Counseling
faculty member. This process should go
as follows:
• First, talk to prospective “new” advisor
to check on interest, match, and availability
• Next, talk with your current advisor
regarding
your interest in changing
• Finally, seek out the Director of Training (Dr.
Stoltenberg) and he will check on loads,
etc.
• If all concerned are in agreement, the change is
made
Occasionally, it may be optimal to have cochairs for the
dissertation.
Doctoral Advisory Committee:
It is best to put together your doctoral advisory committee
early in your program, ideally during
the first year or as soon as you know the direction you will
take with your research. Typically
doctoral committees have five members, but may have more.
At least three of these members
must be Counseling Psychology faculty members and one must
be from another department on
the Norman campus. Always consider selection of committee
members based on their expertise
and what they can contribute to your research project.
When all invited committee members have agreed to serve,
the student should obtain and fill out
the Doctoral Committee Appointment Form, obtain the signatures
of the members and the
advisor, and submit the form to the DEP Graduate Liaison Officer
for approval and forwarding to
the Graduate College. The committee is then formally appointed
by the Graduate Dean upon
recommendation from the student’s advisor and the DEP
Graduate Liaison Officer.
Advisory Conference (See also current Graduate
College Bulletin):
The advisory conference is the time at which the full committee,
in conference with the student, approves the coursework, research
proficiency areas, and the residency plan. The student distributes
tentative versions of these plans to each committee member
using the Advisory
Conference Form and the Residency Plan Report. Also distributed
are a copy of the student’s personal vita, and a statement
of the projected time frame for completing the remaining degree
requirements. Advisory conferences are usually held at the
end of the first year of study. However, scheduling the meeting
time and place are the responsibilities of the student. Following
the advisory conference, all completed forms must be approved
by the DEP Graduate Liaison Officer and sent to the Graduate
College.
