Counseling Psychology Doctoral Program
Admission Information

The prospective student should apply to the Graduate College of the University of Oklahoma on forms which are available on the above link or by calling (405) 325-3811. This application is separate from the departmental application available at this web site. You should note that the University Graduate College Application takes 4-6 weeks to process after all transcripts and application forms have been received in the Admissions office. Applicants are encouraged to call the Admissions Office of the University at (405) 325-2251 to check the status of their university application.

In order to receive full consideration in the admissions process, the following information must be received by the Applications Officer, Educational Psychology Department, Collings Hall, Room 321, 820 Van Vleet Oval, Norman, OK, 73019-2041 by the January 10th deadline:

• Completed departmental application, including your vita, personal
demographic information, employment history, professional and
theoretical orientation toward Counseling Psychology, and a self
assessment as to academic and professional motivation, strengths,
and limitations.

• Copies of all graduate and undergraduate transcripts (these
need not be official). These should be submitted with the
departmental application and are separate from the official
transcripts sent to the graduate college.

• Graduate Record Examination aptitude scores. Only scores for
the general aptitude areas (Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical) are
required. Applicants should designate “Education” as the
departmental recipient of the GRE scores forwarded to the University
of Oklahoma.

• Three letters of recommendation completed by acquaintances that
are familiar with the applicant’s qualifications. References should be
solicited from faculty members and others who have personal
knowledge of one’s academic work and/or professional experiences.
References from psychologists are preferred.

• An interview, either in person or by phone, will be required for
applicants who appear to be the best match for the program.

The University of Oklahoma application form and all official transcripts should be sent to the Office of Admissions and Records, Buchanan Hall, 1000 Asp Avenue, Norman, OK 73019. All other materials should be clearly marked with your name and Counseling Psychology Program and returned to the Graduate Programs Officer, Counseling Psychology Program, Educational Psychology Department, Collings Hall, Room 321, 820 Van Vleet Oval, Norman, OK 73019-2041.

Incomplete applications will not be considered after the deadline. Applicants who have on file all required information and/or materials by the deadline date will be notified within 4-6 weeks of their admission status. Since four to six weeks are required to process application materials through university channels, applicants are urged to mail all material by December 1st in order to help ensure that the admissions committee receives them by January 10th. It is recommended that you verify that all information for the departmental application has been received by the Educational Psychology Department at (405) 325-5974 or by e-mail at gpoedpsych@ou.edu at least one week before the January 10th deadline.

Counseling Psychology faculty evaluates each application on specific criteria. GRE scores and grade point averages (especially the last 60 hours of undergraduate, graduate courses, and coursework related to psychology and counseling) are rated. GRE’s tend to average between 1150-1250. In addition, relevant professional experience, research experience, and life experiences adding potential for developing into a quality counseling psychologist are considered. Finally, letters of recommendation and the applicant’s professional statement are evaluated. The most promising candidates are interviewed in person or by phone.

The applicant pool typically consists of approximately 60 - 80 completed applications each year. The number of persons accepted is typically limited to six to eight to ensure a favorable student/faculty ratio. The attrition rate for the program is quite low, approximately 10% for all cases.

With the fall 2005 class, the program has about 46 students, including approximately 31 females and 15 males. Students range in age from 23-59. Approximately 39% of the students are minority group members.
