Educational and Counseling Psychology (EDPY)
EDPY 4413 Introduction to Counseling. Introduction to basic
theoretical and philosophical positions in counseling and
guidance, including the development of the counseling and
guidance profession, the various approaches and techniques
employed in counseling, and the work of the counselor in various
settings.
EDPY 5213 Group Administered Tests. Survey of standardized
tests of intelligence, aptitudes, interests, attitudes, and
personality traits, and selection, use, and interpretation of
such tests. Included are related areas of interest for school
counselors and guidance workers.
EDPY 5410 Occupational Information—Career Development.
Focus on methods of preparing informational files for student
use: the nature of educational and occupational information,
job classification, sources of information, and occupational
surveys and trends. Theories of career development, techniques
of job and occupational analysis, and individual experiences of
reporting client career development are also covered.
EDPY 5423 Theories and Techniques of Counseling. Introduction
to stages in the counseling process, interviewing skills,
counseling objectives, appropriate strategies. Common theories
of counseling and psychotherapy and ethical considerations
in counseling are considered.
EDPY 5430 Theories and Techniques of Group Counseling. Introduction
to group dynamics with emphasis on counseling and consultation.
Surveys theories and group techniques and their applicability.
Experience in conducting and participating in a counseling
group is included.
EDPY 5443 Developmental Guidance in the Schools. This course
has been designed to provide graduate students with the cognitive
knowledge, procedures, skills, and activities needed for the
effective functioning of a school guidance and counseling
program. Emphasis will be placed on age-related activities
and factors involved in the planning of a school guidance
and counseling program.
EDPY 5453 Intervention Strategies for School Counselors.
The purpose of this course is to acquaint the school counseling
trainee with intervention strategies appropriate for an educational
setting. The course is concerned with the practical aspects
of working with children. Major emphasis will be placed on
individual and group techniques, working with parents, collaboration,
and developing effective curriculum to meet the needs of school
students.
EDPY 5463 Multicultural Counseling. Consideration of the
effects of cultural, ethnic, and/or language differences between
counselor and counselee in the helping process. Emphasizes
sensitization to minority cultural values and methods for
enhancing multicultural communication.
EDPY 5910 Practicum in School Counseling. Two semesters required.
The first semester focuses on Professional Issues such as
ethics in counseling and assessment. The second semester focuses
on Counseling Theories.
EDPY 5920 Internship in School Counseling. Two semesters
required. This course allows the student to apply the knowledge
and skills acquired to a school setting. The student will
work under close supervision of a school counselor in collaboration
with the university instructor
Instructional Psychology and Technology (EIPT)
EIPT 5033 Introduction to Educational Research Methods. An
introduction to major methods of scholarship and research
in education, including historical, descriptive, survey, and
experimental techniques. Designed to assist students to become
perceptive consumers of research.
EIPT 5163 Educational Psychology—Child. This course
focuses on theories and trends in developmental psychology,
including an emphasis on the understanding of the physical
cognitive, and psychosocial development of pre-school and
school-aged children.
EIPT 5173 Educational Psychology—Adolescent. This course
covers major theories and trends in developmental psychology,
including an emphasis on the understanding of the physical,
cognitive, and psychosocial development of teens.
EIPT 5203 Measurement and Evaluation in Education. An introduction
to basic concepts of educational measurement, evaluation,
and testing. Includes interpretation and uses of standardized
tests. Emphasizes development of affective assessment for
“teacher-made” tests. Students will also develop
proficiency in the basic statistical procedures (graphic display,
central tendency, variability, and association) required for
handling assessment data.
Special Education (EDSP)
EDSP 5173 Collaboration for Lifelong Integration. Explores
best options for integrating exceptional individuals into
society from birth through adult years.
EDSP 5412 Theories in the Education of Exceptional Children.
Surveys all types of disabilities with special attention to
causes, diagnoses, and educational planning. Legislation related
to special education is overviewed. Designed for teachers,
supervisors, counselors, and administrators.
Additional elective courses are available through
the program and the department to enable the student to qualify
for certification as a school counselor.
